Anger mediates the relationship between changes in alcohol use and violence
Alcohol use, anger, and violence are variables closely influencing one another. The association between changes in anger and subsequent violence was not mediated by changes in alcohol use. The association between changes in alcohol use and subsequent violence was mediated by changes in anger; however, this mediating effect disappeared when controlling for PTSD severity. These findings shed light on the importance of anger and PTSD as contributors…

A Randomized Clinical Trial of Mobile Contingency Management Intervention for Cannabis Use Reduction
Overview of Efforts to Increase Women Enrollment in the Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program
Background: Ensuring enhanced delivery of care to women Veterans is a top Veterans Affairs (VA) priority; however, women are historically underrepresented in research that informs evidence-based health care. A primary barrier to women's participation is the inability to engage with research in person due to a number of documented challenges. The VA Million Veteran Program (MVP) is committed to increasing access for women Veterans to participate i…

Large epigenome-wide association study identifies multiple novel differentially methylated CpG sites associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in veterans
Taken together, the present findings suggest that SLC4A2 , CDK5 , PDE3A , and RARRES3 may play a role in STB. CDK5, a member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family that is highly expressed in the brain and essential for learning and memory, appears to be a particularly promising candidate worthy of future study; however, additional work is still needed to replicate these finding in independent samples
Using iterative random forest to find geospatial environmental and Sociodemographic predictors of suicide attempts
Taken together, our findings highlight the importance of social determinants and environmental factors in understanding suicide risk among veterans
Nonsuicidal self-injury among veterans is associated with psychosocial impairment, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and underutilization of mental health services
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a robust predictor of suicide attempts. However, understanding of NSSI and associated treatment utilization among Veterans is limited. Although impairment may be assumed, few studies examine the association between NSSI and psychosocial functioning, a core component of the rehabilitation framework of mental health. In a national survey of Veterans, current NSSI ( n = 88) was associated with higher rates of suicid…
Ambulatory Heart Rate Variability Monitoring
OBJECTIVE: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a useful index of psychological and physiological stress. While several wristband devices have purported to measure HRV, none have demonstrated reliability when compared to the gold standard Holter monitor. We evaluated the reliability of HRV readings from the Empatica E4 wristband compared to a Holter monitor over a 24-hour period of simultaneous monitoring. METHODS: Agreement between the monitors was a…
Cannabis use and suicide risk among Gulf War veterans
Cannabis use has been indicated as a risk factor for suicide in veterans. This study of Gulf War veterans tested the relationship between self-report past year cannabis use and (a) past year suicidal ideation and (b) risk for suicidal behavior. Data were from a national sample ( N = 1126) of Gulf War veterans. Logistic regression models indicated cannabis use was associated with past year suicidal ideation and elevated risk for suicidal behavior,…

Among the participants, 747 (12.0%) were current smokers and 1039 (16.8%) were former smokers. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that White race, substance use disorder, and posttraumatic stres…
Social support, social undermining, and acute clinical pain in women
Women may be disproportionately vulnerable to acute pain, potentially due to their social landscape. We examined whether positive and negative social processes (social support and social undermining) are associated with acute pain and if the processes are linked to pain via negative cognitive appraisal and emotion (pain catastrophizing, hyperarousal, anger). Psychosocial variables were assessed in inner-city women ( N = 375) presenting to an Emer…

The objective of this study was to identify common themes among women veterans who smoke or recently quit and had used smoking cessation treatment within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The study built upon previous research by utilizing in-depth interviews to encourage disclosure of potentially stigmatized topics. Twenty women veterans enrolled in VHA care engaged in a quality improvement project focused on improving smoking cessation …
Trauma and Autonomic Dysregulation
OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to elevated heart rate (HR) and reduced heart rate variability (HRV) in cross-sectional research. Recent evidence suggests that this link may be driven by individual differences in autonomic arousal associated with momentary negative affect (NA). Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of NA and minute-to-minute HR/HRV monitoring, we examined whether NA-related HR/HRV mediated th…
Neuroticism Increases PTSD Symptom Severity by Amplifying the Emotionality, Rehearsal, and Centrality of Trauma Memories
OBJECTIVE: Although it is well established that neuroticism increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), little is known about the mechanisms that promote PTSD in individuals with elevated levels of neuroticism. Across two studies, we examined the cognitive-affective processes through which neuroticism leads to greater PTSD symptom severity. METHOD: Community-dwelling adults with trauma histories varying widely in severity (Study 1…
