  • Clowning as Critical Practice: Performance Humor in the South Pacific

    Steven R Nachman, William E Mitchell•ARTICLE•Man•1994•Cited by: 10

The work of the clown is avowedly political - passionately opinionated about the human condition and, via parody and burlesque, breaks the frames of proper behaviour to instruct, criticise and transform. Whether the clowning performance is a critique of others' actions, appearances and beliefs, or initiated to effect a cultural transformation, the clown is a political force that commands recognition. By focusing on the practice of clowning in the…

    Steven R Nachman•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Among the Melanesians of Nissan Atoll in Papua New Guinea, laughter and humor may occur as expressions of Schadenfreude--pleasure at the misfortunes of others. Gossip and storytelling, in particular, offer occasions for such expressions. Following a general statement about laughter and humor, this essay describes situations in which they occur on Nissan and then focuses on those situations that appear to involve Schadenfreude. Particularly signif…

    Steven R Nachman•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1984•Cited by: 14

Lying occurs in all human societies, yet few anthropologists have explored this phenomenon ethnographically. Based in part on my own field experiences, I suggest some of the problems connected with making such a study. There follows an after-the-fact exploration of lying among the Melanesians of Nissan Atoll (Papua New Guinea). As is undoubtedly the case universally, islanders disapprove in principle of lying, but also recognize circumstances und…
