This article looks at popular responses to the zarzuela Chin-Chun-Chan and the issues that surfaced around its timely subject in early twentieth-century Mexico City. The principal source is the Mexico City satiric penny press for workers, supplemented by somewhat less polemical broadsides, both sold on the streets of the capital. Aimed mostly at working-class Mexicans, these sources offer a glimpse at popular attitudes circulating in a public sph…

  • Satan's Playground

Robert Buffington, Robert M Buffington•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

Reading Satan’s Playground, Paul Vanderwood’s latest history of the San Diego– Tijuana borderlands, I was struck by its unexpected resonances with Mike Davis’s City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles (Verso, 1990), one of the foundational texts of postmodern geography. City of Quartz offered up provocative readings of the great early twentieth-century southern California mythmakers — boosters, noirs, mercenaries, exiles, etc. — and t…

  • Teaching and Learning Guide for

    Open Access•Robert Buffington•ARTICLE•History Compass•2008

Author's Introduction One of the thorniest problems confronting historians is figuring out what is at stake for historical actors: how people in the past understood their situation, what they did (or didn't do) about it, and why. The ‘stakes’ problem becomes even more complicated when it revolves around issues of gender and sexuality – issues that are often very different for historical actors than they are for present‐day historians. This essay …

  • Subjectivity, Agency, and the New Latin American History of Gender and Sexuality

    Open Access•Robert Buffington•ARTICLE•History Compass•2007•References: 9

Recent critiques of the concept of agency by social historians have raised concerns about the ways in which it distorts, flattens, and over‐simplifies the historical field. This article argues that a better theoretical understanding of the complex intersections of subjectivity (especially the process of subjection through which the subject is produced and maintained) and agency (as exercised by the subject) will resolve many of those concerns and…

  • Culturas de pobreza y resistencia

Robert Buffington, Robert M Buffington•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2006

The 12 essays and the theoretical/historiographical introduction that comprise this excellent edited collection analyze popular responses to nation building in Mexico, from the beginning of the independence era until the dawn of the 1910 revolution. The essays are divided into two sections. The first contains studies of the urban poor and their resistance to vagrancy laws and other elite efforts at social control, four examining Mexico City and o…

  • Reconstructing Criminality in Latin America

    Carlos A Aguirre, Robert Buffington•EDITOR•BOOK•Reconstructing Criminality in…•2001

The only reader currently available on criminality in Latin America, Reconstructing Criminality in Latin America reconstructs the way in which different Latin American societies have viewed, described, defined, and reacted to criminal behavior. Crime in Latin America is explored in terms of gender, race, class, and criminological theory. The highly readable essays in this book explore how Catholic notions of sin, natural law, the "divine" rights …

  • Tales of Two Women

It was the perfect murder, really. Illicit passions: two beautiful women-of-the-night feuding over a dashing young rake, a masked ball, casual taunts, thwarted assaults, escalating threats. Heinous crime: the lover's borrowed gun, midnight bordello visit, fighting words, a gun shot, a maid's scream, a young woman's tragic death. Cruel punishment: suicidal remorse (by some accounts), humiliating public trial, twenty lost years (the maximum sentenc…

  • Revolutionary Reform

    Robert Buffington•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•1993•Cited by: 1
