  • The Visible Hand on the Land

    Open Access•Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2026

Adam Smith famously coined the metaphor of the ‘invisible hand’ to describe a capitalist market that was driven by individual aspirations and promises for profits but produced, somehow miraculously, something resembling a common good. Although the image of the invisible hand appeared in a rather marginal and fleeting passage in The Wealth of Nations , it became a key metaphor in nineteenth- and twentieth-century economic language and thinking. 1 …

    Open Access•Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•Araucaria•2026

  • Skulls, the "Mazze," and the Promise of Union

    Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•SubStance•2024

This contribution investigates a specific agricultural protest movement that emerged towards the end of the Second World War in Western Switzerland. In the spring of 1945, dissatisfied farmers in the French-speaking part of Switzerland founded the "Union Romande des Agriculteurs" (URA), a peasant opposition movement that struggled against both the increasing power of the state and the existing farmers' organizations in regulating agriculture and …

  • Die Vermessung des animalischen Motors

    Open Access•Juri Auderset, Hans-Ulrich Schiedt•ARTICLE•Body Politics•2023

English abstract: Working animals were an integral and important part of economic production systems in many parts of Europe during the 19th and up to the mid-20th century. Horses, oxen, donkeys, cattle, and dogs provided muscular energy, draft power and intellectual skills for countless farming and draft operations and were thus highly versatile and mobile prime movers in the agricultural and transportation economy. Given this ubiquity of workin…

  • Exploring Agriculture in the Age of Industrial Capitalism

    Juri Auderset, Peter Moser•ARTICLE•Agricultural History•2022•References: 32

This article explores how Swiss agronomists and farmers experienced, perceived, and interpreted the modernization of North American agriculture from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries by examining a series of travel reports, correspondence, diaries, photographs, and film material that they produced about their study trips to the United States and Canada. These sources are an interesting point of departure for transnational perspec…

  • From Old Regime to Industrial State

    Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•Agricultural History•2022

German industrialization has been the subject of heated debates among historians. During the so-called Sonderweg debate in the 1980s—which scrutinized the long-term structural developments that enabled the rise of National Socialism and attempted to explain the peculiar German path into modernity—the patterns of German industrialization and its entanglements with politics and culture ranked high on the agenda of historians. Attention to the topic…

  • Manufacturing agricultural working knowledge

    Open Access•Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•Rural History•2021•Cited by: 2

After the First World War, agricultural work became a subject of intense interdisciplinary scientific inquiry. The shortage of agricultural labour, the nutritional and agricultural crises and the increasing significance of the movement for the rationalisation of work contributed to the creation of new scientific institutions that focused on the study and improvement of agricultural work. This contribution sketches the emergence and development of…

  • Übersetzung und Interpretation

    Juri Auderset•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2017

After a long period of relative negligence, the late 1930s witnessed an increasing interest in the work of Alexis de Tocqueville. Anglophone intellectuals and émigré scholars rediscovered the work of this nineteenth-century French writer and read his analysis of modern democracy in the light of their crisis-shaken present. However, it was only after the Second World War that Tocqueville found his way into a broader German-speaking public, thus sp…
