  • The Would-Be Technocracy: Evaluating Efforts to Direct and Control Social Change with Internet Protocol Design

    Open Access•Farzaneh Badiei, Bradley Fidler•ARTICLE•Journal of Information Policy•2021•References: 6

This article discusses the shortcomings of value in design approach to protect human rights on the Internet. It argues that Internet protocols do not single handedly mitigate human rights on the Internet and in order to measure their impact, they need to be put in context. In other words, instead of design determinism, contextual analysis of Internet technologies that involve Internet protocols should take place

  • The Evolution of Internet Routing: Technical Roots of the Network Society

    Bradley Fidler•ARTICLE•Internet Histories•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the humanities and some social sciences, many social theories, histories, and philosophies of networks often draw on incomplete representations of the Internet’s evolution and structure. Empirical and analytical difficulties result when scholars select this partial understanding as an archetype that they use to derive underlying social properties, and consequences, of networks. These networks, in turn, are put to work as both as a metaphor to …

  • Financial and Administrative Infrastructure for the Early Internet: Network Maintenance at the Defense Information Systems Agency

    Bradley Fidler, Andrew L Russell•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2018

Popular and scholarly histories of computer networking often focus on technical innovation and the social impact of those innovations. These histories are marked by a contradiction, namely, failing to explain the existence of the infrastructure that they must ultimately use as evidence for the success of innovation, and the conduit of its social impact. The story of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Agency's (DARPA's) Arpanet, and the role of bo…
