  • Tracing Animals in Forests and on Paper: Drawings and Relational Understandings of Life and Place

    Open Access•Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•Universitas Humanística•2025•References: 17

This paper examines the encoding power of drawings as vehicles for ethnographic conceptualization. By comparing a set of drawings collected by the author in the Western Amazon with illustrations from scientific field guides, this textexplores how images of animals do more than merely represent species. Instead, it is argued, drawings actively enact particular versions of nature. In doing so, they not only open possibilities for understanding natu…

  • Transitional Justice beyond the Human

    Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 20

Indigenous and Afro-Colombian peoples often describe the harm caused by armed conflict in terms of damage inflicted on their traditional territories. To these peoples, the concept of territory makes reference not only to their lands but to a set of emplaced practices and relationships through which they share life with wider assemblages of human and other-than-human beings. It is the threat faced by these large communities of life that was invoke…

  • Inside a jaguar's jaws: On the hybrid afterlives of warfare

    Open Access•Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 42

Inspired by the case of a jaguar raised as a pet by some paramilitary warlords, this article discusses how armed conflict encompasses more-than-human realities, becoming a hybrid experience capable of dislocating the borders between environmental and social processes, predation and warfare, human and nonhuman agency, and subjects and objects. It draws attention to a pervasive form of damage-afterlives-that stays with people in ways that compel us…

  • Feral Animals, Rastrojo, and Dispossession: Images of the Afterlives of War in Bajo Atrato, Colombia

    Open Access•Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 33

This article examines the ruinous traces left by armed conflict in the villages of Afro-Colombian rural peoples living in Bajo Atrato, a region located in the Colombian Pacific lowlands. Through a set of images that illustrate the way animals and plants participate in the decline of abandoned houses and fields, I argue that war is not just a phenomenon unfolding in particular places but rather a force producing such places. Attention to the lasti…

  • Ecúmene de vivos y muertos: Mala muerte y reparaciones territoriales en el Bajo Atrato

    Open Access•Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•Revista Colombiana de Antropología•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 21

    Open Access•Daniel Ruiz‐serna•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This essay describes the enchanted, sylvan world of a peasant community from L a M acarena, a protected area located in C olombia. Often depicted as invaders or destroyers of natural resources, these peasant societies have had little place in popular and academic representations of A mazonia. Through the use of images that depict some of the tools and practices associated with hunting and fishing, this essay aims to describe some of the elements …
