Nuclear safety by numbers. Probabilistic risk analysis as an evidence practice for technical safety in the German debate on nuclear energy
The article explores the introduction of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) for nuclear energy in the two German states, the FRG and the GDR since the late 1960s. We argue that PRA - which promised to make potential dangers associated with the new technology calculable, comparable and seemingly controllable by reducing them to numerical terms - is best understood as an evidence practice, aiming to (re-)establish intersubjective agreement on nucl…
Peaceful atoms in agriculture and food: How the politics of the Cold War shaped agricultural research using isotopes and radiation in post war divided Germany
During the Cold War, the super powers advanced nuclear literacy and access to nuclear resources and technology to a first-class power factor. Both national governments and international organizations developed nuclear programs in a variety of areas and promoted the development of nuclear applications in new environments. Research into the use of isotopes and radiation in agriculture, food production, and storage gained major importance as governm…
Past and Present Energy Societies: How Energy Connects Politics, Technologies and Cultures
Abundant, salutary, problematic - energy makes history. As a symbol, resource and consumer good, it shapes technologies, politics, societies and cultural world views. Focussing on a range of energy types, from electricity and oil to bioenergy, this volume analyzes the social, cultural and political concepts and discourses of energy and their implementation and materialization within technical systems, applications, media representations and consu…

Atoms for peace and radiation for safety – how to build trust in irradiated foods in Cold War Europe and beyond
When Eisenhower announced the decision of his administration to promote peaceful uses of atomic science and technology on an international scale in his famous Atoms for Peace speech in front of the United Nations' General Assembly on 8 December 1953, agriculture and food were among the potential areas of application that he mentioned. Consequently, the Atoms for Peace initiative prompted national governments of many countries as well as internati…

Forschen fur Stalin: Deutsche Fachleute in der Sowjetischen Rustungsindustrie, 1945-1958 (review)
Technology transfer belongs among the core topics of the history of technology. One of its most intriguing chapters is the transfer of Third Reich high technology to the victorious powers after World War II. Even before the end of the war, the Allies started a race for German know-how and signaled that the "hot" conflict would be followed by a "cold" war. How this race started, the different motives and strategies of the Allies, and the outcomes …
A Socialist Consumption Junction: Debating the Mechanization of Housework in East Germany, 1956-1957
"The first, difficult postwar years have been overcome, the years in which people bought clothing simply to have something to wear, without too much consideration of appearances, the years in which people were glad to possess a few cups and plates of varied origin. The times have passed in which windows were hung with old air-raid curtains and people were satisfied with furniture put together after any fashion with a few pieces of wood. Today's c…
Constructing Socialism: Technology and Change in East Germany, 1945-1990 (review)
After the Berlin Wall came down, a great deal of source material became available as East German archives opened their doors. Historians began digging into these new sources for knowledge on the rise and fall of state socialism, and a number of studies on the political, social, economic, and cultural history of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) have been published during the last ten years. Histories of technology remained rare, however. Thus …

Women to replace the ‘front officers of technology'? On the development of technical studies for women in the soviet occupation zone and the GDR (1946–1971)
One of the most marked changes in the career situation of the engineers, coming in the wake of the social restructuring in GDR state socialism, consisted in the latent challenging of technical competence as a component of male gender identity and it followed from the state's aim to increase the proportion of women in the technical intelligentsia. Despite all such efforts, however, the homosocial culture of engineering education remained unbroken …
