Archive Research into Dutch Naval Logbooks, and Preliminal Open Access of its Digitization
We carried out research into nineteen century Dutch logbooks, especially a series of naval logbooks kept at the National Archive in the Hague. It is voluminous archive, with its 500 metres containing an enormous amount of data. Our initial concern was meteorological data recorded in logbooks. We have digitized part of the archive, for six ships with a duration of about one hundred months, in order to reconstruct the climate of the past. Also in t…

A timely and urgent work in our doom-laden age of climate change, it encompasses not only the air-conditioning of…

The Atmospheric Pressure Observations 1856-1858 by Father Louis Furet, at Naha, Japan

Commentary
This commentary is inspired by my participation in the conference on post normal science: New Currents in Science: The Challenges of Quality, 2016, Ispra. First, I will describe Japanese commitment to PNS, which consists of a part of the long history of the Japanese response to European citizens' science/technology movement, in the framework of the introduction of Post-Normal Science in East Asia. Then I will re-examine the relationship between t…
Japan's “Nuclear Village” Beyond the Border
In this paper, the authors analyze the formation of a network of Indonesian nuclear experts. Their investigation of Indonesia's major institutions of nuclear engineering—the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Badan Tenaga Nuklir Nasional, BATAN), the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Badan Pengawas Tenaga Nuklir, BAPETEN), and the Bandung Institute of Technology (Institute of Technology in Bandung, ITB)—reveals a visible Japanese influence in Indone…
An Unpublished Manuscript Geologica Japonica by Von Siebold
In this article, I will discuss one important aspect of historical encounters between Western colonial scientists and Japanese nature. In order to do so, I will shed new light on how geo-sciences became an object of scientific research of Japan, in the framework of Dutch colonial sciences. I will also show that Western interests in Japanese geo-sciences were primarily stimulated by economic motivations, and that, at the same time, it accompanied …
Techno-Science and the State in the Japanese Empire
Techno-Science and the State in the Japanese EmpireYang Daqing, Technology of Empire Janis Mimura, Planning for Empire Togo Tsukahara (bio) It is a pleasant surprise to find two serious English-language scholarly works on Japan’s period of empire-building and the Japanese state’s use, appropriation, and management of technology. Together, these works suggest that the Japanese attempt at expansion and empire-building in the twentieth century and t…

Introduction (2)
It is generally agreed that East Asian economic development has been realized through techno-scientific success. The Japanese were the first in East Asia to adopt Western science and technology and have the strongest economy because of it.It is equally obvious, however, that while local innovation and technological advancement have brought benefits, they have also brought suffering, challenging situations, and unresolved ambiguities.Subjecting tec…

Meteorology on the Southern Frontier of Japan's Empire
This paper outlines some characteristics of the academic activity in the Japanese colonial setting, with special reference to meteorology on the southern colonial frontier of Japan's Empire, through the works of Ogasawara Kazuo at Taihoku Imperial University. We first review the establishment of Japan's overseas meteorological network and the corresponding institutionalization of meteorology in that period. We will then consider Ogasawara's acade…
