From Practice to Artefact: Heritage Licensing and the Ontology of Coracle Net Fishing in Wales
This paper examines how the designation of coracle net fishing in southwest Wales as intangible cultural heritage is reshaping the ontology of the fishery. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research with the Carmarthen Coracle and Netsmen Association, the study approaches river fishing not simply as an economic activity but as a culturally embedded practice through which relationships with river environments, kinship, ecological memory, and se…

Exploring the Biography of Gaming Stones at Aredhiou, Cyprus during the Late Bronze Age
This article explores the social lives of gaming stones, a significant number of which have been found at the Late Bronze Age farming settlement of Aredhiou Vouppes, Cyprus. The number of gaming stones found at the site is unprecedented within a Late Cypriot context. Comparatively few are found in the contemporary urban centers, and in general they appear to be more typical of the Middle Cypriot social world. The purpose of this article is to inv…
Beyond the 'thingification' of worlds: Archaeology and the New Materialisms
This article considers the application of the New Materialisms within archaeology, primarily in response to Witmore's influential discussion article: Archaeology and the New Materialisms (2014), specifically his emphasis on things. This, the authors demonstrate, is peripheral to the main thrust of the New Materialisms discourse. They unravel complexities in the terminology and consider the etymological and epistemological framework of concepts su…

Body Matters: Exploring the Materiality of the Human Body
Body Matters approaches the material world directly; it seeks to remind people that they are the matter of their bodies. This volume offers an assortment of contributions from anthropology, archaeology and medieval studies, with case studies from northern Europe, the Near East, East Africa and Amazonia, which variously draw attention to the multiple shifting materials that comprise, impact upon and co-create human bodies. This lively collection f…
Exploring Aredhiou: New Light on the Rural Communities of the Cypriot Hinterland During the Late Bronze Age
This article explores social practices and the material world at Aredhiou Vouppes, a Late Bronze Age rural community in the Cypriot hinterland. In-depth analysis of the excavation results demonstrates that this site was more complex than current typologies of inland production centers, based mainly on survey data, would suggest. Instead, it was multifunctional and played an important economic role within the wider Cypriot landscape. This article …

The Social World of Early-Middle Bronze Age Cyprus: Rethinking the Vounous Bowl
The Vounous Bowl occupies a privileged position in discussions of prehistoric representations on Cyprus. It has most commonly been viewed as a sacred scene, or a religious ceremony conducted within a rural sanctuary, and several commentators have emphasized the funerary connotations of the scene, perhaps depicting idealized funerary ritual or an ancestor cult. Somewhat mundane interpretations of the bowl place it within a range of genre scenes, p…

Survey at Arediou "Vouppes" (Lithosouros), a Late Bronze Age Agricultural Settlement on Cyprus: Settlement on Cyprus: A Preliminary Analysis of the Material Culture Assemblages
A Late Bronze Age settlement was identified at Arediou "Vouppes," Cyprus, in 1993. This has been interpreted as an agricultural support village and, as such, forms a lynchpin in the development of political-economic models based on the island's settlement hierarchy. This paper examines the material culture assemblage recovered during intensive survey in 2004, in particular the ceramics and lithics, with a view to testing the interpretation of the…

Gaza Research Project. Report on the 1999 and 2000 Seasons at al-Moghraqa
This report presents the results of survey and excavation at al-Moghraqa, in the vicinity of the Wadi Gaza. The objective of fieldwork was to establish the date of the site, the nature of its occupation and in particular the context and function of the terracotta cones previously recovered at the site in 1996. The stratigraphic sequence is published, demonstrating that the main period of occupation of al-Moghraqa spans the Middle Bronze II period…
Gaza Research Project: 1998 Survey of the Old City of Gaza
This article presents results of the first season of fieldwork conducted by the Gaza Research Project in 1998. Fieldwork comprised small-scale topographic survey around the old city of Gaza and reconnaissance of other second millennium tell sites in the region, namely Tell Ali Muntar. The primary aims were to examine the chronological and topographical relationship of two proximate tell sites lying at the southern limits of the Levantine coastal …

Egyptian ‘Funerary Cones’ from El-Moghraqa, Gaza
In 1996 the Palestinian Department of Antiquities, Gaza, identified a previously unknown site dating to the second millennium BC, in the area of el-Moghraqa, some joom north of the Wadi Gaza. The cultural remains recovered from the surface included a series of terracotta cones stamped with the cartouches of Thutmose III and Hatshepsut. These artefacts are unique amongst the cultural assemblages of the Levant and are most closely paralleled by Egy…

Consuming Passions: A Contextual Study of the Local Consumption of Mycenaean Pottery at Tell el-Ajjul
This paper re-examines the little known corpus of Mycenaean imports to Tell el-Ajjul. Specifically, it evaluates the evidence for the incorporation of this imported pottery within everyday life and death at the site, in order to assess the extent to which it impacted on local culture. While Mycenaean imports denote privileged access to the luxury commodities of Mediterranean trade in the later second millennium BC, the main axis of external conta…

Cypriot Black‐on‐red Ware: Towards a Characterization
Chemical analysis of Early Iron Age sherds from Cyprus and the Levant using atomic absorption spectrometry shows that Black‐on‐Red ware was manufactured only in Cyprus. Two types of fabric are isolated, calcareous and non‐calcareous, and their technological significance discussed. The presence of trade links between the Cypriot sites of Kition and Amathus and sites in the Levant is suggested

The social impact of Mycenaean imported pottery in Cyprus
Large quantities of imported Mycenaean pottery are found in Cyprus between the late fifteenth and mid-thirteenth centuries BC, usually in ceremonial or funerary contexts. This article examines the role and value of the Mycenaean imports in Late Cypriot contexts. It is suggested that the incorporation of certain elements of the Mycenaean ceramic repertoire within Late Cypriot funerary ritual had a dramatic impact on the indigenous pottery industry

Representations of a shrine on a Mycenaean chariot krater from Kalavasos–Ayios Dhimitrios, Cyprus
An important tomb group was discovered during the 1992 excavations of the Late Cypriot II town at Kalavasos–Ayios Dhimitrios. The tomb contained large quantities of Mycenaean ceramics, ranging in date between LH III A 2 and III B. Of particular importance was a chariot krater with the representation on both sides of a shrine, surmounted by horns of consecration, housing a seated female figure. As yet the iconography is unmatched among the known c…
Transition from bronze to iron at Kourion: A review of the tombs from Episkopi-Bamboula and Kaloriziki
Two cemeteries associated with the early iron age occupation of Kourion have been excavated at the localities of Bamboula and Kaloriziki. In his publications of these cemeteries Benson attempted to demonstrate continuity of occupation at Kourion in the transitional bronze–iron age. A reanalysis of the pottery from both cemeteries has instead shown that the supposed continuity of occupation at Kourion is a result of Benson's erroneous identificati…
