You Got to Keep It Secret”, Barriers to Mental Health Treatment Among Low-income, Midlife Women
This study provided deeper insight from the unique community of low-income, primarily Black and Latina women in North Philadelphia. ‘Who is going to put their life on the line for a dollar? That’s crazy’
BACKGROUND: Financial compensation of research participants has been standard practice for centuries, however, there is an ongoing debate among researchers and ethicists regarding the ethical nature of this practice. Effect of Neighborhood and Individual-Level Socioeconomic Factors on Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence
Despite the effectiveness of screenings in reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality, ~25% of US adults do not adhere to screening guidelines. Prior studies associate socioeconomic status (SES) with low screening adherence and suggest that neighborhood deprivation can influence CRC outcomes. We comprehensively investigated the effect of neighborhood SES circumstances (nSES), individual SES, and race/ethnicity on adherence to CRC screening in a m…

Health Care Workers’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices on Tobacco Use in Economically Disadvantaged Dominican Republic Communities
Tobacco use is increasing globally, particularly in low and middle-income countries like the Dominican Republic (DR) where data have been lacking. Health care worker (HCW) interventions improve quit rates; asking patients about tobacco use at each visit is an evidence-based first step. This study provides the first quantitative examination of knowledge, attitudes and practices of DR HCWs regarding tobacco use. All HCWs (N = 153) in 7 economically…
Blood Lead Levels of Refugee Children Resettled in Massachusetts, 2000 to 2007
Objectives. We described elevated blood lead level (BLL; ≥ 10 μg/dL) prevalence among newly arrived refugee children in Massachusetts. We also investigated the incidence of BLL increases and BLLs newly elevated to 20 μg/dL or higher in the year following initial testing, along with associated factors. Methods. We merged data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Refugee and Immigrant Health Program and the Childhood Lead Poisoning …
Touch and Contamination
In this study we investigate patients' concerns about HIV transmission from doctors during the course of routine medical care. Patients' fear of AIDS, level of discomfort with medical procedures performed by a physician suspected of having AIDS, and perceived risk of AIDS transmission in physician-patient interactions were examined among 313 patients attending adult clinics at a university-based outpatient center in a large Midwestern city. Resul…
