Beyond pigment
This study presents the results of a multi-analytical strategy implemented to investigate the composition of pigments preserved within the shells of marine bivalves recovered from six archaeological sites from the Late Bronze Age to the 6th-7th century CE in the present-day United Arab Emirates. The analysed bivalve specimens contain greenish or blackish materials in the shell interior and according to current archaeological interpretations they …
An Integrated Diagnostic Approach to Deepen the Understanding of Michele di Matteo’s Wooden Panel Coronation of the Virgin
This study presents a non-invasive, integrated and multidisciplinary diagnostic approach applied to the analysis of the altarpiece Coronation of the Virgin, attributed to Michele di Matteo (15th century). The investigation focused on the evaluation of a restoration intervention carried out in 2023 using quantitative colorimetric measurements to assess chromatic variations induced by surface treatments. Other non-invasive techniques, including mul…
Integrated Comprehensive Characterization of Black Crusts from Milan’s Monumental Cemetery
Black crusts are degradation features found on stone buildings, offering valuable insights into local pollution sources. Their composition and structure reflect environmental conditions, making them important indicators for environmental and conservation studies. In this study, black crusts collected from funerary monuments in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan were comprehensively characterized using SEM-EDX, Raman spectroscopy, LIBS, and oxidativ…
Non-Invasive and Micro-Invasive Analyses for Supporting the Attribution of Three 17th Century Wooden Crucifixes
This research deals with a multi-analytical approach to characterise three polychrome wooden crucifixes attributed to Fra’ Umile da Petralia or, in one case, close to his style. The analysed wooden sculptures belong to (1) the Sanctuary of Saint Umile from Bisignano (Cosenza, Italy); (2) the Santissimo Crocifisso Church at Cutro (Crotone, Italy); (3) the Saint Salvatore Church at Gangi (Palermo, Italy). Fra’ Umile (Giovanni Francesco Pintorno) wa…
Disclosing Colors and Pigments on Archaeological Objects from the Aga Khan Necropolis (West Aswan Egypt) through On-Site Analytical Methods
The present study is aimed at the characterization of artifacts excavated in the necropolis surrounding the mausoleum of the Aga Khan in Aswan (Egypt), as part of the Mummies Investigations Anthropological & Scientific West Aswan Necropolis (MIASWAN) project. Four cartonnages and some pottery shards were investigated on-site by means of non-destructive and micro-destructive techniques, such as attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform infrare…
Quantification of the Aluminum Content Leached into Foods Baked Using Aluminum Foil
In this study, determinations of the aluminum content in meat and fish performed after having cooked these foods using commercially available aluminum foil have been performed. The release of this chemical element was evaluated by cooking beef, chicken, and fish wrapped with commercial aluminum foil using seasoning or without seasoning in order to evaluate the effect on Al leaching into the food. The characterization of the food samples was carri…
A methodological approach to define the state of conservation of the stone materials used in the Cairo historical heritage (Egypt)
Efficiency of an Air Cleaner Device in Reducing Aerosol Particulate Matter (PM) in Indoor Environments
Indoor air quality (IAQ) in household environments is mandatory since people spend most of their time in indoor environments. In order to guarantee a healthy environment, air purification devices are often employed. In the present work, a commercial household vacuum cleaner has been tested in order to verify its efficiency in reducing the mass concentration and particle number of aerosol particulate matter (PM). The efficiency has been tested mea…
