Partner relationships are no static entities: they form, they are consolidated, and they have to survive crises – all under changing historical circumstances. This introduction aims to develop new perspectives on couple relationships as dynamic life constellations in East and West Germany after 1945. It examines the normative settings and changes in love conventions to analyze how the ideal and everyday lives of singles and unmarried and married …
Die Grenzen der Beziehungen
Discourses and practices of relationship (and dating) among unmarried and married couples changed fundamentally in East and West Germany after 1945. As the bourgeois nuclear family model eroded, heterogeneous relationship forms began to emerge in the 1970s and 1980s. But how revolutionary was this change? Analyzing cohabitation practices in East and West Germany, this article argues that the pluralization and liberalization of partner relationshi…
Technological Solutions and Contested Interpretations of Scientific Results
This article traces the different classifications of diesel emissions either as “safe” or as “hazardous” in the US and in West Germany between 1977 and 1995. It argues that the environmental regulation of diesel emissions was a political threshold. It contributes to our general understanding of how politicians, environmental lobbyists, scientists, and engineers constructed the standards and norms that defined the “safe” limit of environmental pol…
Familie im 20. Jahrhundert
The family was an embattled social institution in the 20 th century. Competing notions of society focused on the family. Conflicts included the understanding of gender roles, the meaning of housework and outside work, and ideas about partnership and child-rearing. These issues were always linked to the question of which forms of family the state should legitimize or discriminate against
The Individualization of Everyday Life
This volume deals with the depth and time range of the religious change in the long 1960s. Social agents are examined as well as reasons, in order to evaluate if all kinds of religiousness were affected alike, thereby focusing on the lifestyle of the individual. Which impact had religious concepts/ideals and churchly agenda on various subareas of lifestyle, how did this impact diversify in the course of time and how did it relate to competing sec…

Gab es den Wertewandel?
Is the supposed “shift in societal values” since the 1960s a truly novel phenomenon or is it part of a longer-term process of change in modern industrial societies? In this volume, historians and sociologists engage in a critical examination of social science research on value change. Empirically based essays examine family models, the work ethic, and educational ideals in Germany, Europe, and the US.
Eco-Friendly versus Cancer-Causing
This article analyzes the ways in which identical and divergent perceptions of the carcinogenicity of diesel-engine emissions emerged in the United States and West Germany between 1970 and 1990. Therefore, it reviews how automakers, policymakers, experts, and the media negotiated which exhaust emissions were either eco-friendly or hazardous. Communicating complex technological and scientific facts to the public, these actors translated the inform…
The Escalation of German Reprisal Policy in Occupied France, 1941-42
This article deals with the escalation of German reprisal policy in occupied France in the years 1941 and 1942. The consequences of the German attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 became apparent to the occupiers in August and September 1941, when the number of cases of active resistance increased. After a demonstration on 13 August 1941, the first draconic measures were imposed by the Wehrmacht, leading to the execution of two communists a…
