Concern for God and Concern for Society: Religiosity and Social Justice
This paper adds to the integration of sociology of religion and social stratification by bringing together work in social justice from sociology of religion and economic issues from social stratification. The research focuses on the narrower topic of attitudes toward economic justice. Specifically, it focuses on the contributions of both religiosity and religious affiliation to such attitudes. The contributions of the religious components are ass…
Social Context and the Presbyterian Gay/Lesbian Ordination Debate: Testing Open-Systems Theory
Partial Paradigm Shifts in the Social Sciences: Twenty Years of Research in Rural Sociology3
Falk and Zhao (1989) have recently suggested that increased theoretical diversity characterizes the last decade of published research in Rural Sociology. We suggest that this claim is premature, given paradigmatic trends in the larger discipline of sociology. From a reanalysis of data sources and the use of an analytical framework based on the partial paradigm concept, we conclude that rural sociology is attempting to further integrate theory, me…
Mathematical modeling in sociology: An exemplar (1)
This paper describes the method of differential equation modeling. To illustrate its application in sociology, a theory of the contribution of income to occupational prestige is developed and tested. The importance of theoretical foundations and inference therefrom is then discussed with a view to providing a model for teaching and the initiation of research
Power Models and Error Terms
An example is presented to illustrate potential problems of working with logarithmic transformations to linearize an intrinsically nonlinear power model. Recommendations to avoid the pitfalls identified herein are offered
Presence of Significant Others and the Avowal of Happiness among the Elderly: Reply to Bobys
The Changing Association between Age and Happiness: Emerging Trend or Methodological Artifact
The negative association between age and happiness displayed by over two decades of studies has shifted to positive in recent research. However, parallel changes in sampling techniques, measurement strategies, and use of control variables in recent research suggest that the shift may be more artifactual than actual. Data from seventeen national polls between 1948 and 1977—comparable to the research period on age and happiness—were used to examine…
