Waste or Heritage? Tensions, Invisibilities, and Ambiguities in the Glass and Plastic ‘Ages’ in the Anthropocene
This paper assesses the use of ‘plastic age’ and ‘glass age’ terms, using a bibliometric approach to identify their proponents, purposes, and connections to debates in Anthropocene and heritage studies. This study explores how glass and plastic have been portrayed as age-defining materials and how this concept relates with what is expected to be preserved for future generations. Social control and disciplining discourses on mobility practices during Portuguese dictatorships (1930s–50s)
This paper addresses the production of discourses on the mobility practices of ‘the poor’ as a form social control in Portugal during the military dictatorship (1926–32) and the first decades of the Estado Novo (New State) dictatorship (1933–74), namely on barefoot pedestrians, and on professional motorists. Roads for the 1940 Portuguese Nationality Commemorations
The history of two roads projected and built for cars during the first phase of the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal (1933–1945) is reconstructed in the context of similar developments in interwar Europe, showing the particularities of a peripheral European country. It shows the importance of automobile infrastructure to this dictatorial regime, the political uses of this technological sublime, and the controversies triggered by the exception…
Political Transitions, Value Change and Motorisation in 1970s Portugal
During the revolutionary period of 1974–76, there was vigorous debate in Portugal regarding the role of automobiles in the desired new society. The dispute was reinforced by the first international oil crisis. Strong ideological rhetoric was deployed either to defend the potentially liberating role of the automobile or to condemn its ‘bourgeois' underpinnings. This debate influenced social movements, policies, perceptions and views of social acto…
