  • Stone workshops between petrography and iconography: A preliminary study on Iron Age basalt carvings

Open Access•Cristiana Biancalani, Marina Pucci et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2026

The flourishing of sculptural series on orthostats, protomes and statues, which decorated the so-called Syro-Hittite city-state citadels, represents a unique phenomenon in stone production during the pre-classical period (12th-7th centuries BC) in the Syro-Anatolian region. • Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Anthropogenic Activities on Human Health: A Systematic Review

Open Access•Luigi Cofone, Marise Sabato et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2024

Due to major global urbanisation, a careful evaluation of plans (town planning and mobility) and projects (industrial and development) is required in order to measure their impact on health and environmental matrices. In Italy, Legislative Decree No 152/06 introduced two procedures: the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) and SIA (Strategic Impact Assessment). Their focus, however, does not consider human health. Recently, the Integrated Enviro…

    Open Access•Eva Pietroni, A Botteon et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 3

This paper sheds light on the manufacturing processes, techniques, and materials used in the splendid illuminations of the oldest surviving copy of De Balneis Puteolanis, preserved at the Angelica Library in Rome (Ms. 1474). The codex is one of the masterpieces of mid-13th-century Italian-Southern illumination, traditionally referred to as the commission of Manfredi, son of Frederick II. The findings reported in the article result from the interd…

  • Potential of synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) for a 3D non-destructive and/or non-invasive characterisation of cultural heritage geomaterials (CHG)

Open Access•Elena Possenti, Maria Catrambone et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2024•References: 1

The present work describes the high potential of the recently developed synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) for 3D mapping of crystalline and amorphous phases in Geomaterials of Cultural Heritage (CHG). The paper critically discusses the promising results and limitations of XRDCT in Cultural Heritage applications. XRDCT has been applied herein to diverse CHG materials, spanning from archaeological ceramics, and stone conserv…
