Ancient Evidence of Plant Processing in Human Communities at the End of the European Pleistocene
The land of the last hunter-gatherer groups in the Ebro basin
In this paper we adopt a new perspective on the chronology and settlement strategies of the last Mesolithic societies of the Ebro basin. For this purpose, we applied concepts from population biology (carrying capacity) and redefined the catchment area of the sites using GIS analysis tools. We concluded that the last hunter-gatherer groups lived below their means, so that physical and cultural reproduction was guaranteed. Therefore, the changes th…
An evolutionary approach on the study of the funerary systems in Late Prehistory allows recognizing diverse contexts of social crises in the north of Iberia. The analysis of the radio-chronological data that we have compiled indicates five phases of use—with the newness of identifying two different cycles during the Late Neolithic—and of subsequent ‘abandonment’ in the megaliths; this is reduced to two phases in the case of the sepulchral caves. …
Environmental dynamics of the western European Mediterranean landscape during the Pleistocene to Holocene transition
A strategic aim of research into climate change in the distant past is to respond to the contemporary challenges of global warming at the present. Determining the processes of adaptation by ecosystems to these challenges, evaluating the effects of environmental change on human communities and finding which regions are more or less sensitive to climate change are among the key topics of environmental research today. Throughout the past millennia, …
There and back again
A profound change took place in the lithic technology of the last hunter-gatherer societies in Western Europe and North Africa at the end of the Early Holocene. In a short period, several technological innovations were adopted in geographically, socially and culturally different contexts; a situation that raises many questions about the mechanisms that enabled this successful expansion and acceptance. In this paper, we propose a regional approach…
For a fistful of geometric microliths
Reconstructing climate and soil formation processes in the Atxoste rock-shelter (Upper Ebro Valley, Northern Spain)
Pottery with ramiform-anthropomorphic decoration from El Portalón de Cueva Mayor site (Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos) and the globalized symbolic world of the first Neolithic
The text presents a collaborative project that combines a C14 database of the Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula and the Shared Archaeological Information System -SIAC-. It is structured in five sections: genesis, construction, visor, reflection and exploitation and a case study: the analysis of caves with funeral records. The project offers, today, more than 8,400 c14 dates from the Iberian Peninsula (and the Balearic Islands): complex queries …
We analyze the evolution of the geometric proyectiles at the end of the Mesolithic and the beginnings of the Neolithic: this study is carried out region by region with special attention is given to the segments with retouch helwan. It is observed that during the Mesolithic is a shared evolution in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula and, at the same time, a regionalization according to the preferences by some or other types. During the Neolithic i…

Widespread exploitation of the honeybee by early Neolithic farmers
Proofs of Long-Distance Relations between Central Europe and Inland Iberian Peninsula during Neolithic and Bronze Age. Evidences from the Material Culture of the Site of El Portalón (Sierra de Atapuer…
El Portalón of Cueva Mayor is one of the present-day entrances to the Cueva Mayor-Cueva del Silo karst system located in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain). It is an important archaeological site with extended Holocene occupation which has been subjected to a number of excavations since the nineteen seventies. From its significant collection of bone and antler industry, for this work, we have chosen artefacts indicating local production and …
Epipalaeolithic assemblages in the Western Ebro Basin (Spain)
Agricultura Neolítica
In this work we present a study of a Neolithic mill from Atxoste (lava, Basque Country). The settlement is a rock-shelter with long stratigraphy (about six meters): in the base we have identified a Magdalenian level, followed by several Mesolithic occupations and, finally, the Neolithic one. Atxoste represents the most common type of settlement documented along the Ebro Valley in the early stages of the Holocene, revealing the general patterns of…

The Ebro Basin in NE Spain
Petrographic and Geochemical Evidence for Long‐standing Supply of Raw Materials in Neolithic Pottery (Mendandia Site, Spain)
Pottery from the Neolithic Mendandia site has been studied. The radiocarbon dating of the site corresponds to a range of dates from 7488–7546 cal bc to 5283–5437 cal bc : the first occurrence of pottery is dated at 5968–6040 cal bc for the lower level III, and up to 5386–5560 cal bc for level II. The antiquity of the potsherds places them within the oldest pottery production sequences in the Iberian Peninsula, which adds to the interest of this s…

The Transition between the Last Hunter-Gatherers and the First Farmers in Southwestern Europe
The dynamism of the Mesolithic in the Iberian peninsula offers new perspectives for the study of the process of Neolithization. In particular, in the Basque region we observe in Early Holocene times a well-established population that received and adopted Neolithic innovations. The archaeological elements clearly indicate cultural continuity across the transition; here we deal with those related to territoriality, economy, chronology, and lithic a…
