Migration and Innovation: Learning from Patent and Inventor Data
Research on international migration and innovation relies heavily on inventor and patent data, with "migrant inventors" attracting a great deal of attention, especially for what concerns their role in easing the international transfer of knowledge. This hides the fact that many of them move to their host country before starting their inventive career or even before completing their education. We discuss the conceptual and practical difficulties t…
The Role of Relatedness and Unrelatedness for the Geography of Technological Breakthroughs in Europe
This article proposes a framework to study how the existing knowledge portfolio of regional economies affects the emergence and occurrence of breakthrough technologies. The study discusses the relevance of cognitive distance between the technology of a breakthrough invention and the existing technological base in their geographic vicinity. Theoretically, it introduces the idea that both relatedness and unrelatedness between the technologies in br…
The ties that bind and transform: Knowledge remittances, relatedness and the direction of technical change
This study investigates whether high-skilled migration in a sample of OECD countries fosters technological diversification in the migrants’ countries of origin. We focus on migrant inventors and study their role as vectors of knowledge remittances. Further, we particularly analyze whether migrants spark related or unrelated diversification back home. To account for the uneven distribution of knowledge and migrants within the host countries, we br…
Highly skilled and well connected: Migrant inventors in cross-border M&As
Connecting cities, revitalizing regions: The centrality of cities to regional development
This editorial and accompanying themed issue reflect on the centrality of cities to regional development. Focusing on the role and function of cities in processes of innovation, production, distribution and consumption as both individual sites and networks of sites of production, the papers examine classic questions in economic geography about concentration, diffusion, and flows of labour and capital and the policy regimes that govern that moveme…
The International Mobility of Talent and Innovation: New Evidence and Policy Implications
The international mobility of talented individuals is a key part of globalization. In the quest to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, many governments have sought to attract skilled migrants from abroad, inciting both a global competition for talent and concerns about the displacement of domestic workers. This important new work investigates why skilled individuals migrate and how they shape innovation around the world. Using patent data fr…
Global reversal, regional revival
Regional Studies celebrates its 50th anniversary with this special issue. This introductory article reflects back on developments since the journal was started and offers signposts for urban and regional research looking ahead. It outlines the changing global context for regional studies and identifies some of the ways in which the need for regional research is enhanced by the extraordinary challenges currently confronting the world. It also intr…
Relatedness, external linkages and regional innovation in Europe
Relatedness, external linkages and regional innovation in Europe. Regional Studies. This paper analyses if the generation of new knowledge benefits from the combination of similar or dissimilar pieces of existing technologies, in terms of their technological content (related versus unrelated variety), for the case of European regions. Specifically, it analyses the relevance of variety in the case of local knowledge as well as in the case of the k…
Foreign-origin inventors in the USA: Testing for Diaspora and Brain Gain Effects
We assess the role of ethnic ties in the diffusion of technical knowledge using a database of patents filed by US-resident inventors of foreign origin, identified by name analysis. We consider 10 leading source countries, both Asian and European, of highly skilled migration to the USA and test whether foreign inventors' patents are disproportionately cited by (i) co-ethnic migrants ('diaspora' effect), and (ii) inventors residing in their country…
Agglomeration economies and regional intangible assets: An empirical investigation
This article examines the impact of agglomeration economies on economic outcomes and is specifically concerned with analysing the effect on standard regressions of including variables that measure intangible assets that might boost productivity as well. Thus, in assessing the relationship between agglomeration and productivity, we consider endogeneity issues arising from the omission of these variables, together with problems of simultaneity and …
Research Networks and Inventors' Mobility as Drivers of Innovation: Evidence from Europe
Miguélez E. and Moreno R. Research networks and inventors' mobility as drivers of innovation: evidence from Europe, Regional Studies. This paper investigates the importance of the labour mobility of inventors, as well as the scale, extent and density of their collaborative research networks, for regional innovation outcomes. To do so, a knowledge production function framework at the regional level is used. The empirical approach presented takes f…
