  • Dvořák's Violin Concerto Reconsidered: Joachim's Influence, Bruch's Model and Romantic Innovations in Sonata Practice

    Open Access•Peter H Smith•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2022•References: 13

Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53, maintains a curious position among the finest Romantic‐era compositions of the genre. Although it holds a secure place in the concert repertoire, it has achieved neither the exalted status of Beethoven's and Brahms's violin concertos, nor the popularity of those by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Bruch. Scholars invariably cite the failure of the concerto's dedicatee, Joseph Joachim, to perform the work a…

  • Parallel Binary or Tripartite? Formal Hybridisation of Sonata Types in the Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Peter H Smith•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2021•References: 25

Hepokoski and Darcy's sonata theory subdivides the sonata universe into five basic types. These include not only the familiar sonata without development (type 1), ‘textbook’ sonata (type 3), sonata‐rondo hybrid (type 4) and concerto form (type 5), but also the somewhat less familiar parallel‐binary designs of expanded type 1 and type 2. Many movements follow conventions of only one of these types, but there are also instances that fall in a grey …

    Open Access•Peter H Smith•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 25

In his classic essay 'Issues in Composition', Carl Dahlhaus posits a dialectical relationship in Brahms between the function of harmony as a source for motivic 'individualisation' and as a basis for large-scale formal organisation. This dialectic may be profitably engaged in light of the current debate between Schenkerian and neo-Riemannian views of harmony, with Brahms's Sextet in G major, String Quartet in C minor and String Quintet in G major …

  • Liberal and Illiberal Democracy in Latin America

    Open Access•Peter H Smith, Melissa R Ziegler•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 17

This article examines the incidence of liberal and "illiberal" democracy in Latin America from 1978 through 2004. It demonstrates, first, that illiberal democracy-which combines free and fair elections with systematic constraints on citizens' rights-became the norm throughout the region. Second, it shows that regime transitions most often ended not in liberal democracy but in illiberal democracy. Third, rare events logit analysis reveals that two…

Democratization in Latin America took place throughout the 1980s within a context of acute economic crisis, thus posing a sharp challenge to established theory. This essay examines alternative explanations-economic, political, institutional, international-for this paradoxical outcome. It is argued that the political impact of the debt crisis differs for the short, medium, and long terms. The analysis also devotes considerable attention to the con…

That does the future hold for U.S.-Mexican relations? Optimistic assessments usually point to the high degree of interpenetration between the two societies, the recent history of intergovernmental cooperation, and the commonality of basic interests. Developments in one country have significant impact on the other, a process that now works both ways: the 1982 economic crisis in Mexico created serious difficulties for retailers on the U.S. side of …

    Peter H Smith•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•1981•Cited by: 2

A View from Latin America One might expect this essay to be very brief. Political history, as everyone knows, has come to be old-fashioned and outmoded. Especially in the United States, and to a substantial extent in Europe as well, attention has turned from authority figures and policy-makers to common people and popular masses. Explorations in economic history have continued to shed light on the origins and transformations of feudalism, capital…

M /[OST OF THE literature about Caudillismo in Latin America places great stress upon the question of charisma-that is, the extent to which a leader 's spiritual qualities or sense of mission embodies the aspiration of his followers and thereby serves as a basis of popular support. The emphasis seems proper, since there can be no doubting the importance of any dictator's charismatic qualities. At the same time, little attention has been paid to t…

HE conventional role of the Puritan biography was to establish a purely spiritual guide for the wayward descendants of England's seventeenth-century orthodoxy. One of the most pervasive phenomena in the modern political world is authoritarianism-regimes characterized by "limited pluralism," identifiably and analytically distinct from democratic or totalitarian types of rule. Well over a third of the contemporary nation-states, mostly in the developing regions, fall into the authoritarian category-and this fact alone would seem to call for intensive research. Nevertheless, despite the obvious importance …
