  • The Interior Borderlands: Regional Identity in the Midwest and Great Plains

    Open Access•Brad D Lookingbill, Brad Lookingbill•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2020

This book of essays emerged from a 2015 conference at Augustana University, where Harry Thompson, the executive director of the Center for Western Studies, assembled sixty or so participants. Discussing the states along the Missouri River Basin, they pondered an essential question: Where does the Midwest end and the Great Plains begin? Jon K. Lauck of the University of South Dakota edited their answers, which became twenty incisive chapters. “We …

    Open Access•Brad D Lookingbill, Brad Lookingbill•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2020

In 1918, John Benton Hart of Colorado reminisced about the “Old West” to his son Harry, an aspiring writer. He shared vivid stories about his military adventures as a blue-clad trooper in the Eleventh Kansas Cavalry, fighting in Missouri during the Civil War and on the western frontier during the Reconstruction era. He also recalled his civilian experiences as a contract laborer for the U.S. Army, which operated remote outposts along the Bozeman …

  • Julie Courtwright. Prairie Fire: A Great Plains History

    Brad Lookingbill, B D Lookingbill•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2013

The smell of burning pastures still kindles memories from my childhood in Oklahoma. People living in the Great Plains have long used fire to sustain the grasslands, where humans burned away old grass to make way for new growth. From time to time, lightning strikes and dry seasons spark an accidental fire. With smoke drifting across an open sky, fires constitute a regular occurrence in many parts of the American West. Julie Courtwright considers t…

  • Dust Bowl, USA: Depression America and the Ecological Imagination, 1929-1941

Mark Harvey, Brad D Lookingbill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002

Brad D. Lookingbill's book is the first postmodern history of the dust bowl of the 1930s. As such, it is not concerned with topics typically encountered in studies of that event such as the environmental causes or consequences of the dust storms, their effects on social life within the Great Plains, or federal agricultural policy. Instead, the book takes as its subject the very language that the dust bowl inspired. Lookingbill is interested in te…
