  • Peak Oil, Urban Form, and Public Health: Exploring the Connections

Nikhil Kaza, G A Van Der Knaap et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 45

We assessed the relationships between peak oil and urban form, travel behavior, and public health. Peak oil will affect the general economy, travel behavior, and urban form through income and substitution effects; however, because of the wide range of substitution possibilities, the impacts are likely to be gradual and relatively small. Furthermore, we suggest that changes in travel behavior and increases in urban density will have both favorable…

  • The Geography of Global Corporate Networks: The Poor, the Rich, and the Happy Few Countries

    Open Access•Ronald S Wall, Ronald Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 56

The gradual integration of nations within our globalizing world is strongly related to the economic networks formed by multinational headquarters and their various subsidiaries located across the globe. Although the corporate reach of multinational corporations (MNCs) is clearly global, the geographical scope of their activities remains limited. Focusing on the network of ownership relations between the global Fortune 100 MNC headquarters and the…

  • Sectoral Differentiation and Network Structure Within Contemporary Worldwide Corporate Networks: Economic Geography

    Open Access•Ronald Sean Wall, Ronald Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•2011•Cited by: 29•References: 53

This article contributes to the converging literatures on global production networks and new regionalism, which show that these two entities and their respective geographic scales are complexly interdependent. It explores two key conceptual differences between the leading world city network studies of Alderson and Beckfield and the work of the Global and World City (GaWC) Research Network. The first is the sectoral differentiation of the data, in…

  • The Effects of High-density Zoning on Multifamily Housing Construction in the Suburbs of Six US Metropolitan Areas

    Open Access•Arnab Chakraborty, G A Van Der Knaap et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 18

This paper presents an empirical analysis of the effects of high-density zoning on multifamily housing construction from 1990 to 2000 in the suburbs of six US metropolitan areas. Zoning constraints are measured as the total number of high-density units allowed by right in each suburban jurisdiction obtained from local zoning ordinances and geographical information data. Using two-stage least squares, the analysis provides two important results: z…

  • Measuring Urban Form: Is Portland Winning the War on Sprawl?

Yan Song, G A Van Der Knaap et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Planning…•2004

Although many have written about urban sprawl, few have sought to measure it. In this article, we present several quantitative measures of urban form and compute these for neighborhoods of varying age in Washington County, the western portion of the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area. Our results suggest (1) neighborhoods in Washington County have increased in single-family dwelling unit density since the 1960s; (2) internal street connectivity …

    R A Boschma, G A Van Der Knaap•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This paper presents a theoretical concept (the so‐called“Open Windows of Locational Opportunity” concept, or OWLO concept) which provides an explanation for why it is rather uncertain and unpredictable where new high‐technology industries will emerge in space. This is due to three tightly linked features of new high‐tech industries. Firstly, new high‐tech industries reflect a high rate of discontinuity because they place new demandson their local…

  • Foreign Involvement in the Spanish Automobile Industry: Internalising versus Networking

    Open Access•A Lagendijk, G A Van Der Knaap•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The authors focus on the internationalisation of automotive production in Spain. In the first part of the paper they discuss two main approaches of international production: internalisation theory and network theory. It is argued that both approaches may be applied in a staged model of internationalisation. In the second part they highlight patterns of internationalisation in the Spanish automotive sector in the last two decades, based on data ga…

    Open Access•D C Ament, G A Van Der Knaap•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 20

In this paper a model for small area migration forecasts is presented. It consists of two phases. In the first phase, movers and stayers are generated from the total population, according to move probabilities which depend on a number of characteristics of the population. A logit regression has been carried out to establish the influence of these characteristics on the move probabilities. The second phase of the model deals with the redistributio…

  • Small Area Population Forecasting: Some Experience With British Models

This study is concerned with the evaluation of the various models including time-series forecasts, extrapolation, and projection procedures, that have been developed to prepare population forecasts for planning purposes. These models are evaluated using data for the Netherlands. "As part of a research project at the Erasmus University, space-time population data has been assembled in a geographically consistent way for the period 1950-1979. These…

  • A Linear Structural Equation Approach to Cross-Sectional Models with Lagged Variables

    Open Access•Henk Folmer, G A Van Der Knaap•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Lagged variables play an important role in cross-sectional models in geography and regional sciences. This paper starts with an overview of the situations in which they may be required. Lagged variables also pose serious problems from a statistical point of view: multicollinearity and the determination of the length of the lag. Some common approaches to these two problems are discussed and evaluated. As an alternative a linear structural equation…
