Norwegians and Tobacco in Western Wisconsin
The location of tobacco production in western Wisconsin cannot be explained in terms of climate, topography, soils, markets, labor, or economic inertia. Approximately seventy percent of the tobacco growers are Norwegian, and four-fifths of the growers have Norwegian spouses. The diffusion of tobacco culture among other ethnic groups indicates the importance of church association and intermarriage between ethnic groups. The strong correlation betw…
