The impact of conspiracy beliefs on a targeted group: Perceived popularity of Jewish‐targeted conspiracy beliefs elicits outgroup avoidant behaviours
In three studies with Jewish participants, we explored the consequences of intergroup conspiracy theories on those targeted. In Study 1 ( N = 250), perceived Jewish conspiracy theory popularity was positively associated with intergroup threat and negatively associated with the closeness of contact with non‐Jewish people. Study 2 ( n = 194) employed an experimental design where Jewish participants were exposed to the idea that many (vs. few) non‐J…
Exploring How Parasocial Intergroup Contact With Transgender Influencers on TikTok Reduces Transgender Conspiracy Beliefs
As harmful conspiracy beliefs against transgender people are becoming increasingly popular, three experiments examined how cisgender people's contact with transgender individuals might reduce these beliefs. In Study 1a ( N = 222), positive parasocial contact with transgender creators on TikTok (vs. no contact) was found to increase perspective‐taking, which was associated with lower transgender conspiracy beliefs when controlling for frequency of…
Refusing to Pay Taxes: Loneliness, Conspiracy Theorizing, and Non-Normative Political Action
Conspiracy theorizing can motivate non-normative intentions (e.g., tax evasion and violence). However, less is known about the contributors of these conspiracy-inspired intentions or if they translate into behaviors. Two studies ( N = 1,155) found a positive correlation between loneliness and conspiracy theorizing, which in turn related to non-normative intentions. Study 3 ( n = 234) provided further evidence of these relationships through serial…
Pylons ablaze: Examining the role of 5G Covid‐19 conspiracy beliefs and support for violence
Amid increased acts of violence against telecommunication engineers and property, this pre-registered study (N = 601 Britons) investigated the association between beliefs in 5G COVID-19 conspiracy theories and the justification and willingness to use violence. Findings revealed that belief in 5G COVID-19 conspiracy theories was positively correlated with state anger, which in turn, was associated with a greater justification of real-life and hypo…
Group identity, empathy and shared suffering: Understanding the ‘community’ impacts of anti-LGBT and Islamophobic hate crimes
This article examines the indirect impacts of hate crimes on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Muslim communities in the United Kingdom. Based on 34 qualitative interviews, we explore both the perceived meaning of ‘community’ in the context of targeted victimization and the emotional and behavioural effects that anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Islamophobic hate crimes have on other members of the victim’s group. Building …
