Yielding the benefits of fun in the workplace
Development and Validation of a Measure of Ebullient Supervision: The ES Scale
In an increasingly service-oriented economy, the importance of understanding supervisors’ impact on employees working in a fun work environment continues to grow. While researchers have learned much about the negative outcomes of abusive supervisors, relatively little is known about ebullient supervisors and the beneficial outcomes caused by leaders who create fun work environments for employees. The purpose of this article is to define the conce…
Air Transport
Air transportation is among the most important elements in the global circulatory system. The diffusion of aviation and its increased significance have enlarged the scale and accelerated the pace of everyday life across much of the world. Technological advances, economic development, and deregulation have fueled rapid air traffic growth. Particularly in recent decades, the emergence of many new low‐cost carriers has been catalytic in democratizin…
Airports
Over the past century, the commercial airport has become a critically important land use, a source of significant environmental externalities, an engine for local and regional economic development, and the focal point for a new era of airborne mobility. The space needs of contemporary airports and the NIMBY response they engender have pushed airports to the far periphery of many cities. At the same time, however, airports have become magnets for …

Missed Opportunities: The Restructuring of Berlin's Airport System and the City's Position in International Airline Networks
Alberts H. C., Bowen, Jr J. T. and Cidell J. L. Missed opportunities: the restructuring of Berlin's airport system and the city's position in international airline networks, Regional Studies. After German reunification, Berlin was expected by many to become one of Europe's foremost world cities, but that has not happened, partly because Berlin remains no more than a secondary hub in the global airline industry. This paper traces the history of ai…
Airline networks and the international diffusion of severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars)
In fewer than four months in 2003, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) spread from China to 25 countries and Taiwan, becoming the first new, easily transmissible infectious disease of the twenty-first century. The role of air transport in the diffusion of the disease became obvious early in the crisis; to assess that role more carefully, this study relates the spatial-temporal pattern of the SARS outbreak to a measure of airline network acce…
Competitive Advantage in Global Production Networks: Air Freight Services and the Electronics Industry in Southeast Asia
Drawing upon Porter's diamond theory of competitive advantage and recent work on global production networks (GPNs), this article examines the causes and consequences of spatially uneven air freight services. Air freight flows have grown rapidly because airborne trade enables firms to reconcile time-based competition and spatially dispersed production. The importance of air freight services in this regard is particularly relevant to electronics ma…
Air cargo services and the electronics industry in Southeast Asia
Air cargo services are among the most important producer services for manufacturers with internationalized production networks. In the context of supply chain management strategies, such services allow firms to respond more effectively to competitive forces in global markets. Our research aims to relate to and deepen the theoretical literature on advanced producer services and global production networks by examining the demand for air cargo servi…

Air Cargo Services, the State and Industrialization Strategies in the Philippines: The Redevelopment of Subic Bay
In 1995, the American airfreight and package express firm FedEx established its principal Asian hub at the site of a former naval base in Subic Bay, the Philippines. The new hub transformed the stature of this peripheral region within an international economy in which air cargo services perform an increasingly critical integrative role. After the new hub was launched, Subic Bay's early success in attracting foreign direct investment, particularly…
Network Change, Deregulation, and Access in the Global Airline Industry
This research evaluates changes in the centrality of hubs in the international airline industry from 1984 to 1996 and examines the relationship between those changes and uneven patterns of airline industry deregulation. The development prospects of cities and countries with favored positions in international airline networks are enhanced by their superior access to global flows of people, goods, money, and information. But those networks are dyna…
The relationship between customer loyalty and customer satisfaction
Develops and implements a method for hotels to identify attributes that will increase customer loyalty. Other hotels can replicate the methodology used in this study. The study makes the uses of the hotel’s database to draw samples for both focus groups and a mail survey. Based on 564 completed surveys from hotel guests, the authors found the relationship between customer satisfaction and customer loyalty was non‐linear. The authors use the data …

The State and Liberalization: The Airline Industry in the East Asian NICs
This study of airline liberalization in South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia examines the evolving relationships between states and carriers. The airline industry of East Asia has been an arena for significant liberalization initiatives in the last decade. State-owned carriers have been privatized; new carriers have been allowed to enter domestic and international markets; and government co…

Employment Behavior and the Family in Indonesian Transmigration
The transmigration program in Indonesia involves the government-financed movement of landless people from the crowded Inner Islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok to agricultural-based settlements in the Outer Islands. A major goal is to stimulate regional development and create employment opportunities, but the success of many settler families in the individual settlement schemes is clearly linked to participation in off-farm employment (OFE). Eviden…

The East India Company's Education of its Own Servants
During the eighteenth century the East India Company did not consider the education of its own European civil servants as a necessary care. Appointment was by patronage, and it was assumed that the parents and friends of a writer would have subjected him to the ordinary education of his class. With no more than this background a young writer would sail for India at the age of about seventeen years. The Indian Service was confined to comparatively…
