A Typology of Elderly Migration Based on the Decision Making Process
Current understanding of migration by the elderly is limited by an inadequate theoretical framework. Explanations of migration in the general population are inappropriate in that they emphasize employment motivations for long distance moves and status, family life cycle, and life-style motivations at the local level. Changing Concentrations of Older Americans
The spatial distribution of persons aged 65 and older in the United States is examined for 1950 and 1970. A descriptive analysis is undertaken of maps depicting the county concentration of elderly people relative to total country population. The national pattern of local concentration is found to vary considerably between the two time periods. A westward shift of the region of highest concentration is clearly observable and apparently mirrors ear…
Spatial and Social Dimensions of Intraurban Elderly Migration
Migration histories are examined for a random sample of people age 60 and over who relocated within Kansas City, Kansas since age 50. Migrants are classified into two spatially defined groups, those moving toward and those away from the CBD. Analyses of group centrographic and individual distance-moved statistics reveal that two significant spatial patterns can be observed. The predominant pattern is composed of those moving from central city loc…
