The System of Main Cities: A Critique and an Empirical Evaluation
The author criticizes the concept of the system of main urban centers as a subsystem of a national settlement system. Data on internal migration in Poland are used to challenge the existence of such a system. The author suggests instead that the main cities are best envisaged as being rooted in their own extensive and mutually overlapping hinterlands
