This book looks at the way in which those living in the 1920s and 1930s perceived and responded to the changes taking place in the countryside. Many of the more fundamental problems affecting land use and management were recognised and tackled for the first time. Remedies were sought both on a piecemeal basis and through a more comprehensive system of town and country planning. Readership: town and country planners; central and local government o…

  • Altitudinal Gradients of Soil Temperatures in Europe

    F H W Green, R J Harding•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The altitudinal gradient of soil temperature is examined with the aid of observations from ten countries in Europe. It is shown that this altitudinal gradient is always greatest in summer and least in winter, and that only the amplitude of the seasonal variation differs from one region to another. The altitudinal gradient of air temperature does not show the same degree of consistency, but in all cases it is in summer less than that of the soil. …

    F H W Green•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Intensification of agricultural effort, and an increasing proportion of tillage in the UK, have necessitated considerable alteration in land treatment. Three of these alterations are reviewed?field drainage, liming, and application of artificial fertilizers?and there is discussion of (i) their interrelationships, (ii) their relationship with climatic and other physical variations, and (iii) their non-agricultural effects

Eleven years later, in collaboration with Harrison and Pannett (1965), he produced a similar map extended to include Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire (part shown in Fig. 1). Sutton (1966) had produced a comparable, though more generalized map, covering Berkshire and Oxfordshire (Fig. 2). As pointed out by Mead and Sutton…

During the course of an investigation in the United Kingdom in which such a study was found most useful, certain features came to light that are worth recording for the benefit of those who may find th…

    F H W Green•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1953

W5 yHEN the traveler-be he tourist, businessman, or professional man-travels from place to place, he may be interested in many different things. One thing, however, he is always interested in, and that is the behavior of other human beings. One of the fascinations of crossing an international frontier is that we expect to find more or less spectacular changes in the human landscapes as we cross this often intangible barrier. But less fascinating …
