Placelessness of urban design and industrial branding in small town planning
The paper analyses placemaking in a small Finnish single-industry town through two architectural projects: the municipality’s downtown rejuvenation plan and the new visitor centre of a transnational corporation. It deploys Relph’s concept of placelessness interpreting it relationally with the concept of assemblage, and analyses how the two projects resonate with the place’s material and expressive elements. They represent high-quality architectur…
Recoding of an industrial town: Bioeconomy hype as a cure from decline
We study placemaking in Äänekoski, a small Finnish industrial town, by analyzing how the local government utilizes a recent large-scale bioeconomy investment in its attempts to reinvent the town, and how components of place conform to the image building ‘script’. We deploy an assemblage concept and study local place as a combination of material and expressive properties, forces of (de-)territorialization, acts of (de-/re-)coding and relations of …
Translating bioenergy policy in Europe: Mutation, aims and boosterism in EU energy governance
The EU-Quarter as a political place: Investigating fluid assemblages in EU policy making
We focus on the European Quarter in Brussels as a political place and the spatial context of European Union (EU) policy making. In addition to the EU institutions, the political place consists of a political agglomeration of various kinds of actors, from EU bureaucrats and politicians to a variety of stakeholders and lobbyists from all over the EU, who are permanently present in the Brussels neighbourhood. We present, firstly, the EU Quarter as a…
Positionality Switch: Remapping Resource Communities in Russian Borderlands
This article elaborates on the contested periphery approach and related local models. Some economic geographers argue that the peculiarities of resource peripheries cannot be understood with the help of economic theories designed in economic cores. The contested periphery approach was developed specifically for resource economies and stresses the importance of geographically variable interactions of stakeholder groups that channel broad instituti…

Old‐growth forests as objects in complex spatialities
This article discusses complex spatialities utilising concepts developed in the discipline of science, technology and society (STS). With the help of an empirical case, Karelian old‐growth forests, I argue that territorial regions are object‐like things. The concepts of STS can be utilised when studying fixed territorial regions. The existence of old‐growth forests as defined territories depends on materiality and mobility in regional space, stab…
Performing the Green Market-Creating Space: Emergence of the Green Consumer in the Russian Woodlands
The paper explores green markets as relational effects. The aim is to show that the green markets of the forest industry did not develop and expand through green consumption behaviour but were performed by a hybrid set of actors including environmental nongovernmental organisations, publishing companies, certification agencies, market researchers, and critical citizens. The spatiality of greening is expressed by showing how spatial relations, ter…
Ownership Changes and Transformation of the Russian Pulp and Paper Industry
This paper analyzes recent transformations in the Russian pulp and paper industry, focusing on ownership changes and their effects at the regional and local scales. Russian forest corporations, investment funds, and transnational companies have been purchasing mills and replacing the state as the main agent shaping this sector of the economy. Production figures are presented, main actors identified, recent ownership changes analyzed, and the effe…
