Napoleonic Administrative Reforms and Development in the Italian Mezzogiorno
We study how changes in a country’s administrative hierarchy affect development at the city level. We exploit the 1806 Napoleonic administrative reform implemented in the Kingdom of Naples as a historical experiment to assess whether district capitals endowed with supra-municipal administrative functions gained an urban development premium compared with non-capital cities. We find that district capitals recorded a population growth premium throug…
Value chain, regional institutions and firm growth in Europe
We analyse whether and to what extent the quality of regional institutions has a differential effect on firms’ growth driven by heterogeneity in firm value chain positioning. We analyse turnover growth during the period 2010–2013 for a sample of manufacturing firms located in four European countries—France, Germany, Italy and Spain. We distinguish final firms serving end markets from suppliers serving other firms. Our instrumental variable estima…
Spatial networking and firms’ organization. The case of Italy
The literature on business groups played a significant role in the debate over the evolution of Italian industrial districts. The diffusion of business groups in industrial districts resulted in a hierarchization of productive relationships and increased output concentration. This paper focusses on the presence and the characteristics of business groups in industrial districts. We assume that there are particular features of business groups that …

Agglomeration, networking and the Great Recession
This paper analyzes how and to what extent firms’ external relations, such as belonging to a local cluster or a business group, affect the probability of firm survival and economic performance after the 2008 Great Recession. Using a large data set of Italian manufacturing companies for the period 2005–12, it was found that belonging to a business group or a local cluster mitigates the selection effect determined by the real and financial shocks, …
Does Agglomeration Affect Exports? Evidence from Italian Local Labour Markets
This paper analyses whether and how agglomeration economies – related variety, specialisation and urbanisation – affect the export performance of Italian local labour markets (LLM). Adopting spatial econometric techniques, and controlling for potential non‐linear effects, we find that related variety has a negligible effect on LLMs’ export intensity, while the effect of specialisation economies is negative. On the contrary, urbanisation economies…
Distance-based agglomeration externalities and neighbouring firms’ characteristics
This paper tests the hypothesis that firms with different characteristics can differ in their capability to produce local externalities by investigating the relationship between firm-specific distance-based weighted agglomeration measures and firms’ short-run productivity growth in the Italian manufacturing industry. The results suggest that positive localization economies increase with distance when neighbouring firms’ characteristics are accoun…
Does the development of environmental innovation require different resources? Evidence from Spanish manufacturing firms
Linking emission trading to environmental innovation
Local variety and firm diversification
The aim of this article is to investigate whether and how local agglomeration forces-related and unrelated variety-influence firm diversification. Using a large dataset of 5112 Italian manufacturing business groups for the year 2001, and estimating Tobit models, we show the 'consistency' between the patterns of firm diversification and that of the local system in which the firm is located. Specifically, firms located in local systems dominated by…

An Explanation of Firms' Internationalisation Modes, Blending Firm Heterogeneity and Spatial Agglomeration
This paper uses a large sample of Italian manufacturing firms over the period 2004-06, to investigate whether different types of agglomeration economies affect firms' internationalisation choices. The main novelty of the work consists in linking the hypothesis of firm heterogeneity to the literature on agglomeration economies to explain firms' approaches and forms of internationalisation. We analyse two types of agglomeration economies: localisat…
Agglomeration, Related Variety, and Vertical Integration
Several recent studies have investigated the relationship between the geographic concentration of production and vertical integration, based on the hypothesis that the spatial agglomeration of firms in the same industry facilitates input procurement, thereby reducing the degree of vertical integration. This article contributes to this debate in two ways: first, we focus on interindustry vertical integration, and second, we consider the effects on…
Spatial knowledge spillovers and regional productivity growth in Europe
Spatial agglomeration and business groups
Cainelli G., Iacobucci D. and Morganti E. (2006) Spatial agglomeration and business groups: new evidence from Italian industrial districts, Regional Studies 40, 507–518. This paper is a first attempt to analyse the relationship between spatial agglomeration and firms' organizational structures. It takes advantage of a new and large data set at firm and business group level that allows one to analyse the differences in the presence and characteris…

Brioschi F., Brioschi M. S. and Cainelli G. (2002) From the industrial district to the district group: an insight into the evolution of local capitalism in Italy, Reg. Studies 36, 1037-1053. The aim of this paper is two-fold: to analyse the extent of corporate grouping in the main industrial districts of Emilia Romagna and the reasons for their formation and development; and to show how their evolution in recent years requires rethinking the very…
