  • Information technologies and representational spaces at the outposts of the global political economy: Redrawing the Balkan image of Slovenia

Darren Purcell, Darren E Purcell et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2001

Drawing upon insights from Deibert's (1997) reconstituted medium theory and critical geopolitics literature, this article examines Slovenia'sefforts at crafting an image of itself via the Internet for specific strategic goals such as EU and NATO accession, the promotion of tourism and the attraction of foreign direct investment. Through an examination of both the material and discursive practices undertaken by the Slovenian government, we demonst…

  • Race, Class, and Psychological Distress: Contextual Variations across Four American Communities

    Open Access•Annette M Schwabe, Janet E Kodras•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Analyses investigating the role of race and class in the propensity to psychological distress have yielded conflicting results. We contend that one reason for this inconsistency is that previous studies, based on empirical data drawn from different places and times, have interpreted results without reference to the distinctive racial contexts across the country. Because the specific local conditions in which individuals live differentially expose…

  • The Changing Map of American Poverty in an Era of Economic Restructuring and Political Realignment

    Janet E Kodras•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1997•Cited by: 14•References: 22

The intent of this study is to demonstrate that an understanding of poverty in geographic and historical perspective can powerfully inform the societal debate over the causes of poverty. I argue that conservative theory, attributing poverty to individual deficiencies, such as indolence and low aspirations, falters when the spatial dynamics of poverty in the United States are considered. The changing map of American poverty does not represent an e…

  • Restructured Regions and Families: The Feminization of Poverty in the U.S

John Paul Jones, Janet E Kodras•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1990•Cited by: 16•References: 19

We examine the geographic dimensions of the feminization of poverty in the U.S. from 1970–80. County-level maps of growth in female-headed family poverty show strongest concentration in the Northeast and North Central regions. Three explanations for these variations are presented: the breakdown of the traditional nuclear family, changes in welfare programs, and the status of women's work. The last is integrated into a broader thesis focusing on s…

  • Changes in latitude, changes in attitude: Population movements and conservative shifts in congress

    Open Access•Janet E Kodras•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Migration from the Northeast and Midwest to the West and South over the past decade has been from politically liberal to conservative areas of the United States. Similarly, migration from central cities to suburbs has been from liberal to conservative areas within states. The Constitution and Supreme Court decisions require redistricting between states (reapportionment) and within states (redistricting) every ten years. This study examines whethe…

  • Labor Market and Policy Constraints on the Work Disincentive Effect of Welfare

    Janet E Kodras•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1986•Cited by: 3•References: 15

The popular image of U.S. welfare assistance is that it reduces the motivation to work by offering an alternative to employment. This study examines the work disincentive effect of welfare under spatially variant conditions in the labor market and in the public assistance system. The contention is that the decision between work and welfare, and therefore the work disincentive effect of welfare, is constrained by variable opportunities for employm…

  • The Policy Context of the Welfare Debate

    Open Access•J P Jones, John-Paul Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This paper is an examination of whether welfare program use is more responsive to economic conditions of need or to characteristics of program supply. The results of an analysis of growth in a major US welfare program illustrate that these forces do not operate independently of one another. Instead, welfare participation dynamics reflect economic need only in those jurisdictions where the program is effectively supplied. The policy implications c…
