  • Viewpoint: Agri-nutrition research: Revisiting the contribution of maize and wheat to human nutrition and health

    Open Access•Nigel Poole, Jason Donovan et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Research linking agriculture and nutrition has evolved since the mid-20th century. The current focus is on child-stunting, dietary diversity and 'nutrient-rich' foods in recognition of the growing burdens of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases. This article concerns the global dietary and health contribution of major cereals, specifically maize and wheat, which are often considered not to be 'nutrient-rich' foods. Nevertheless, these cerea…

  • Buy or make? Agricultural production diversity, markets and dietary diversity in Afghanistan

    Open Access•Giacomo Zanello, Bhavani Shankar et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Increasing on-farm production diversity and improving markets are recognized as ways to improve the dietary diversity of smallholders. Using instrumental variable methods to account for endogeneity, we study the interplay of production diversity, markets and diets in the context of seasonality in Afghanistan. We confirm an important seasonal dimension to the interplay. Improved crop diversity over the year is positively associated with dietary di…

  • Principles of innovation to build nutrition-sensitive food systems in South Asia

    Open Access•Dominic Glover, Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Innovations within global food systems have contributed to the predicament known as the triple burden of malnutrition – the co-existence of hunger and micronutrient deficiency with the diseases of overnutrition, such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension. We use the case of the triple burden in South Asia to demonstrate analytically that innovation is a double-edged sword, with positive and negative potential, rather than a simple good. To achiev…

  • Leveraging agriculture for nutrition in South Asia: What do we know, and what have we learned

  • Agricultural inputs and nutrition in South Asia

    Open Access•Bhavani Shankar, Nigel Poole et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 3

There are a number of potential pathways leading from agricultural input decisions to nutrition outcomes of farm households. These have special resonance in less developed areas of South Asia given widespread undernutrition problems, market failures and restricted access to land and other key assets and inputs, as well as ongoing debates around the implications that the green revolution has held for nutritional outcomes. A number of initiatives, …

  • Building Dairy Value Chains in Badakhshan, Afghanistan

    Open Access•Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2018

Considerable recent research has tried to link agricultural production and the distribution of nutrient-rich foods to consumption, and hence improved health, of nutritionally vulnerable population groups. However, we are still unsure how agri-food value chains can assure positive linkages between agriculture and nutrition. Badakhshan is a remote region of Afghanistan, where high rates of malnutrition prevail among vulnerable population groups. Th…

  • Introduction: Who Delivers Nutritious Foods, How and To Whom in South Asia

    Open Access•Mar Maestre Morales, Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2018

There is currently much talk of the private sector role in nutrition, and whether the state can better ‘shape’ the market to deliver nutritional outcomes. This article introduces an issue of the IDS Bulletin which presents research findings in this area developed by the consortium of research partners under the Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia (LANSA) programme. It is the first attempt at nutrition-oriented whole value chain res…

  • Assessing food value chain pathways, linkages and impacts for better nutrition of vulnerable groups

    Open Access•Mar Maestre, Nigel Poole et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 1

This article offers insights into assessing the effectiveness of post farm-gate agri-food value chains at improving the nutrition intake of vulnerable groups. It develops a conceptual framework integrating the value chain concepts with agriculture and nutrition, and identifies key outcomes and requirements for value chains to be successful at delivering substantive and sustained consumption of nutrient-dense foods by poor households. Other framew…

  • Changing asset endowments and smallholder participation in higher value markets: Evidence from certified coffee producers in Nicaragua

    Open Access•Jason Donovan, Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 13

This paper examines the capacities of smallholders in Nicaragua to exploit new linkages to certified coffee markets following the coffee crisis. Data on livelihood assets were collected from 292 households, which were clustered to test how differences in outcomes (asset building) reflect variations in initial asset endowments. The results suggest that most households built particular elements of their asset base and increased their resilience to …

  • Commercialisation: A meta-approach for agricultural development among smallholder farmers in Africa

  • Constructing Livelihoods in Rural Mexico: Milpain Mayan Culture

Annabel De Frece, Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2008•Cited by: 13•References: 16

This article concerns indigenous Mayan communities whose traditional pattern of agricultural subsistence, the milpa, is of much greater significance that many development efforts suppose. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, it examines local meanings attached to the milpa and its relevance to identity, social interaction, constructions of the environment and petty commodity production in explaining resistance to change. Development analysts and NG…

  • The NGO sector as an alternative delivery system for agricultural public services

    Nigel Poole•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•1994•References: 14

In many less developed countries (LDCs) that are undergoing economic adjustment, the promotion of the agricultural sector is constrained by limitations on resources that include finance, and human and institutional capacity. The inability of the state to provide essential agricultural services (for example, agricultural extension and research) leaves a void that could be filled by specialised organisations within the non-governmental sector (NGOs…
