Automated Myth and the Postsocialist Digital State
This article examines Estonia’s Kratt AI initiative as a model for automating government services with AI systems. Responding to the state’s naming of these systems after the kratt—a mythic servant that turns on its master when left idle—the article advances the concept of “automated myth”: folklore embedded in AI to naturalize links between technological progress and liberal democracy. Reproducing Racial Capitalism
This article tracks contemporary debates surrounding human trafficking, sex slavery, and the slave trade, in which the specter of the Ottoman empire and its system of slavery-as well as other "Oriental" slave systems-emerge as templates for imagining the place of sex in slavery. In an unlikely routing of queer sociality and representability in post-1997 Hong Kong cinema through Buenos Aires, Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together anxiously anticipates Hong Kong's disappearance after the handover to China, foreshadowing the twenty-first-century creative and critical engagements with transpacific geopolitics of precarity andglobal capitalism in crisis. While the film has been analyzed in relationship to Hong Kong localism, we consi…
Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe
Roma rights on the world wide web
This article addresses contemporary Roma rights issues in Central and Eastern Europe by exploring the relationship between internet technologies and the discourses surrounding human rights and the post-socialist transition. Because the Roma are a transnational European minority ethnic group, they have been used as a 'test case' by western human rights groups to evaluate minority rights in post-socialist nations. The article highlights the role of…
