  • Maternal Depression in the United States: Nationally Representative Rates and Risks

    Open Access•Karen A Ertel, Janet W Rich-Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of women's health•2011

OBJECTIVES: To examine the public health burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) among mothers: its prevalence and sociodemographic patterns; associated functioning, comorbidities, and adversities; and racial/ethnic disparities. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of 8916 mothers in the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally representative survey of the civilian U.S. population in 2001?2002. • Conservation of Resources theory in the context of multiple roles: An analysis of within- and cross-role mediational pathways

    Rosalind Chait Barnett, Robert T Brennan et al.•ARTICLE•Community Work & Family•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Based on the Conservation of Resources theory, we used data from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS I, 1995–1996; N=1779) to estimate by covariance structure analysis the direct and indirect effects of work and family demands, resources, and support on psychological distress. In a new application of the theory, we estimated six within-role mediational pathways linking work-related predictors to psychological di…

  • Perceived neighborhood safety and incident mobility disability among elders: The hazards of poverty

Open Access•Cheryl R Clark, Ichiro Kawachi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Perceiving a safety hazard due to neighborhood crime was associated with increased risk of incident mobility disability among impoverished elders near retirement age. Consistent with prior literature, retirement age appears to be a vulnerable period with respect to the effect of neighborhood conditions on elder health. Community violence prevention activities should address perceived safety among vulnerable populations, such as low-income elders …

  • Work-Family Enrichment and Conflict: Additive Effects, Buffering, or Balance

Open Access•Karen C Gareis, Rosalind Chait Barnett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 24

We used data from the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS I) (N = 2,031) to compare three models of how work-family conflict and enrichment might operate to predict well-being (mental health, life satisfaction, affect balance, partner relationship quality). We found no support for a relative-difference model in which the conflict-enrichment balance predicted outcomes. In the work-to-family direction, the additive model fit best: Both …

  • Effects of Social Integration on Preserving Memory Function in a Nationally Representative US Elderly Population

Karen A Ertel, M Maria Glymour et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 34•References: 26

Objectives. We tested whether social integration protects against memory loss and other cognitive disorders in late life in a nationally representative US sample of elderly adults, whether effects were stronger among disadvantaged individuals, and whether earlier cognitive losses explained the association (reverse causation). Methods. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 16 638), we examined whether social integration predicted me…
