Open Access•Laura Bowey, Alex Mcglaughlin•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•2006

This article discusses an evaluation of a pilot intervention which aimed to improve attitudes to crime and the police, to reduce exclusion, and to develop self-esteem in young people at risk of offending and/or school exclusion. Evaluation measures were obtained for eleven young people who participated in the intervention, which ran for six consecutive days, including an outward bound weekend. Pre- and post-test assessments show improvements in s…

  • Planning for the future with adults with a learning disability living with older carers

Open Access•Laura Gorfin, Alex Mcglaughlin•ARTICLE•Housing Care and Support•2004•Cited by: 1

Planning for the future for those adults with a learning disability who live with older carers is an important aspect of the White Paper Valuing People (DoH, 2001). Indeed, such planning is essential if crisis situations are to be avoided, particularly the double shock to service users of losing their home at a time when they are also bereaved. Most research about future planning has tended to focus on the perspective of the family carer rather t…

  • Enabling Adults with Learning Disabilities to Articulate their Housing Needs

Alex Mcglaughlin•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2004•Cited by: 2

This study is about involving adults with learning disabilities in service planning by asking them to articulate their own needs in relation to housing. It also identifies some of the barriers to meeting the housing needs of this group. The views expressed indicate that ordinary housing with small numbers is the preference, and that appropriate support is highly valued. This suggests a need for housing of a supported living model or similar. The …

  • Housing for adults with a learning disability: ‘I want to choose, but they don't listen’

    Open Access•Laura Gorfin, Alex Mcglaughlin•ARTICLE•Housing Care and Support•2003•References: 1

The White Paper Valuing People (DoH, 2003) promises to increase choice and control for adults with a learning disability, housing being one area specifically highlighted in this respect. However, lack of knowledge about the preferences of adults with a learning disability makes it very difficult for services to be planned effectively and based on the views of the very group who will use them. This paper discusses the findings of a project which a…

  • 'Race', Class and Gender in Exclusion From School

Alex Mcglaughlin, Debbie Weekes et al.•BOOK•'Race', Class and Gender in…•2002

This book explores the impact of 'race', class and gender on the interaction of pupils and their teachers in the classroom setting. It seeks to examine the extent to which these variables can account for differential rates of school exclusion between pupils from different ethnic/racial groups, socio-economic classes and genders.

  • "Race," Class and Gender in Exclusion from School

Much of the research dealing with education and race has concentrated on the experiences of black males. Research now needs to address the issue of how schools affect the production of black femininities. The aim is to explore how both black males and females adapt to schooling, and school exclusion in particular. Previous theoretical models often situate black women within the stereotype of the ‘superwoman’ and negate the experiences of black fe…

  • Masculinised Discourses within Education and the Construction of Black Male Identities amongst African Caribbean Youth

Cecile Wright, Debbie Weekes et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•1998•Cited by: 9•References: 11

Boys in general, and Black boys in particular, are being excluded from school in ever increasing and disproportionate numbers, drawing attention to the need for a closer examination of the interrelationship between 'race' and gender. Clearly, young Black masculinities are not expressed in isolation, but are, amongst other influences, informed and shaped by school processes. Within schools, the ways in which masculinities are portrayed plays a maj…

  • Attainment and behavioral disturbance at 9 years: The influence of early and late life stress events

Open Access•Alex Mcglaughlin, Maura Morrissey et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1987•References: 6

This paper presents data from a small-scale longitudinal study that examines the importance of life-stress events in early and late childhood for later attainment and behavioral disturbance. The study sample consists of 59 children, all of whom when first contacted lived in families with low incomes, of low social status, and little education. Therefore, all of the children can be considered disadvantaged, and the influence of life stress events …

  • Stimulus Similarity and Transfer in Long‐term Paired‐associate Learning

    Open Access•Alex Mcglaughlin, H C A DALE•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1971

Acoustic, semantic, visual and formal similarity were studied in the A‐B, A′‐B transfer paradigm. Substantial, highly significant, positive transfer was obtained with stimuli that were acoustically or semantically related. For those visually or formally related, the transfer was not significant. It was concluded that the failure to find significant effects of acoustic similarity in previous long‐term memory paired‐associate learning studies has b…
