Conceptualising Reuse in African Households
African households are often models of sustainability, practicing daily behaviours, which, if even not directly associated by the individual with Western conceptualisations of ‘recycling’ or ‘reuse’, have dramatically positive impacts on the amounts of household waste generated. However, rarely has the African household been given the same consideration, and there is a poor understanding within the discipline how poor individuals, and Africans in…
Negotiation of knowledge for coastal management? Reflections from a transdisciplinary experiment in South Africa
Hybrid science-society approaches for knowledge production are often framed by a transdisciplinary approach. Most forms of “linear” progression of science informing policy or the “production” of knowledge as a one-way process are increasingly being challenged. This is also true for coastal and marine sciences informing decision-making to support sustainable development of coastal areas. From the early 2010s, South Africa had one of the most progr…
The Lived Experience of Food Sovereignty
Food sovereignty has become a powerful concept to critique the dominant global food regime. Although it has not taken root in South Africa as fiercely as elsewhere, we use this concept to explore how one small-scale farmer seeks to wean herself from the dominant food system in the small town of Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal. Using ethnographic methods and in-depth interviews about this single intense and extreme case, we explore this farmer's commitme…
Cultivating selves
This is a story of one farmer, Fakazile Mthethwa (also known as Gogo Qho).11 We are grateful to Ms Fakazile Mthethwa for opening her home and work to us to do this work. We are also indebted to the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal for generous research support. This paper complements two other articles published in 2016 in the Journal of Agrarian Change and also in Contexto Internacional. Smanga Mkhwanazi, Mo…
Plant Provocations
This paper examines the possibilities and limitations of an emergent global discourse of indigeneity to offer an oppositional praxis in the face of the depredations of settler colonialism in post-apartheid South Africa. Self-conscious articulations of indigeneity, we argue, reveal the fraught relationship between increasingly hegemonic and narrow understandings of the indigenous and the carceral logic of apartheid. We examine this by focusing on …
Ubuntu
This paper seeks to contribute to the growing body of critical scholarship that extends cosmopolitanism beyond its Kantian conceptions in International Relations (IR). It examines the promise of the ubuntu philosophy which is popular in South Africa and asks whether it can lead to what Pieterse (Development and Change, 37, 2006, 1247) calls “emancipatory cosmopolitanism.” Using Wiredu's (1996) “sympathetic impartiality,” the paper explores insigh…

Getting Globalization Right: The Dilemmas of Inequality. Edited by Joseph S. Tulchin, Gary Bland. In the fifth century BC, Plato (2000:745) warned Athenian legislators that “in a state which is desirous of being saved from the greatest of all plagues—not faction, but rather distraction—there should exist among the citizens nei…
