  • ZooMS as a tool for identifying animal remains from Early Medieval Pohansko

Open Access•Weronika Karolina Cieszynska, Ondrej Šedo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Pohansko, located near Břeclav, is a significant archaeological site in the Czech Republic, as it was one of the major centers of Great Moravia. At the site, numerous animal remains were discovered. Those remains provide critical insights into past dietary practices and human-animal interactions in Early Medieval Moravia. However, the high degree of fragmentation of these remains often makes species identification by using traditional morphologic…

  • Late Holocene Environmental Changes and Human Subsistence in an Alluvial Landscape

    Open Access•Libor Petr, J Petřík et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2025

We examined the data from the floodplain settlement at Pohansko to uncover environmental changes, vegetation development, and floodplain dynamics that influenced the settlement's history and subsistence strategies. Most of the landscape was deforested during the Middle Holocene, while woodlands primarily limited to the alluvium were not significantly affected by human occupation. Human impact gradually increased from the Late Iron Age, peaking in…

  • Multidisciplinary Approach to Identifying Early Mediaeval Gates

    Open Access•Petr Dresler, Michaela Prišťáková et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025•References: 2

This study presents a comprehensive approach to verifying a presumed western gate at Pohansko by integrating nondestructive geophysical methods (ERT, magnetometry and core prospection) with traditional archaeological excavation. The identification and characterization of gates by nondestructive methods within early mediaeval fortified sites have been overlooked in archaeological studies, despite their important role in stronghold defence and sett…

  • Formor project

Open Access•Jiří Macháček, Vladimír Sládek et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

In the ninth century AD, Moravia (now in Czechia) was the heartland of the first Slavic state-like formation in Central Europe. Traditionally, the archaeology of the region has been interpreted via historical records only; the FORMOR project aims to broaden this view by using archaeometry, archaeogenetics, bioarchaeology and introducing new theoretical approaches

  • Tracing the spatial organization and activity zones of an Early Mediaeval homestead at the Pohansko stronghold (Czechia) by combining geophysics and geochemical mapping

    Open Access•Michaela Prišťáková, Katarína Adameková et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Geoarchaeological prospection techniques were applied to identify activity zones and the inner structure of a homestead at the Early Mediaeval site Pohansko near Břeclav (Czechia). By a combination of geophysical methods, the spatial distribution of microartefacts, geochemical analysis and multivariate statistical analysis, we outlined various manifestations of anthropogenic activity. We examined obtained data by Spearman's correlation coefficien…

  • Beaver as proof of the change of natural environment and economy of the first half of the 10th century AD

Open Access•Petr Dresler, Gabriela Dreslerová et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2022

The collapse of the Great Moravian early medieval fortified centre at Pohansko near BÅ eclav triggered some changes. These changes became evident in the development of the alluvial plain environment, as well as in the settlement, subsistence, and economic strategies of the population. One particularly prominent phenomenon was an unprecedented increase in the proportion of hunted animals appearing in osteological assemblages from the 10th century …

  • Runes from Lány (Czech Republic) - The oldest inscription among Slavs. A new standard for multidisciplinary analysis of runic bones

Open Access•Jiří Macháček, Robert Nedoma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2021

When Roman administration and legions gradually withdrew from the outer provinces after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, they created a power void filled by various groups. The dynamic Migration Period that followed is usually considered to have ended when the Germanic Lombards allegedly left Central Europe and were replaced by Slavs. Whether or how Slavic and Germanic tribes interacted, however, is currently disputed. Here we report the fir…
