  • ESR Dating Ungulate Teeth and Molluscs from the Paleolithic Site Marathousa 1, Megalopolis Basin, Greece

    Open Access•Bonnie A B Blackwell, Neeraj Sakhrani et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2018

At 37°24′ N 22°8′ E, the Megalopolis Basin lies in the central Peloponnese Peninsula, southwestern Greece. In the Megalopolis Basin at ~350 m amsl, the Paleolithic site, Marathousa 1, sits within a palustrine/lacustrine clastic package between Lignite Seams III and II, that both likely correlate with interglacial periods. At Marathousa 1, immediately below Lignite Seam III, lies a clayey-silty sand layer with a horizon rich in molluscs ranging fr…

    Mary M A Mcdonald, Marcia F Wiseman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 6

    G. Caton-Thompson and E. W. Gardner designated new Pleistocene cultural units at Kharga Oasis in the 1930’s: both were originally termed ‘pre-Sebilian’, but were later locally named the ‘Levalloiso-Khargan’ and ‘Khargan’ industries. High on the Bulaq scarp face, a puzzling cluster of stone ‘alignments’ was discovered in 1931–32, with a reported, but discounted, association with ‘Levalloiso-Khargan’ artefacts. Gardner excavated some features in 19…

  • ESR isochron dating analyses at Bau de l'Aubesier, Provence, France

    Open Access•Bonnie A B Blackwell, Anne R Skinner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001•Cited by: 6•References: 9

At Bau de l'Aubesier, Provence, Mousterian artifacts and human teeth occur in inhomogeneous (“lumpy”) sedimentary deposits that include bone and tooth fragments and extensive burnt horizons. Electron spin resonance (ESR) isochron analyses of mammal teeth, which use multiple subsamples with different U concentrations, can measure the external dose rate experienced by the tooth regardless of reworking and sedimentary dose rate changes. Isochron ana…

  • Dating a flautist? Using ESR (electron spin resonance) in the Mousterian cave deposits at Divje Babe I, Slovenia

    Open Access•Beverly Lau, Bonnie A B Blackwell et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997•References: 11

The Divje Babe I site is located near Idrija in northwestern Slovenia. The cave contains Mousterian cultural artefacts left presumably by Neanderthals as well as numerous Ursus spelaeus teeth and bones. Among the Mousterian artefacts from layer 8 is a femur with four artificial holes thought to be a bone flute and the oldest known musical instrument. Sediment analyses indicate that the deposit represents at least six major shifts in climate, poss…

    Open Access•Bonnie A B Blackwell, Bonnie Blackwell et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1990•Cited by: 8•References: 7

A controlled test of the amino acid dating method as it is currently being applied to bones and teeth was attempted for the time range 100‐250 ka, beyond that of 14 C, at the archeological site of La Chaise‐de‐Vouthon (Charente, France). In Bourgeois‐Delaunay, mammal fossils associated with Paleolithic artifacts were collected from layers dated at 101 ± 12 to 114 ± 7 ka by 230 Th/ 230 dating of the over‐ and underlying stalagmitic floors. Racemiz…

  • U-Series Analyses of the Lower Travertine at Ehringsdorf, DDR

    Open Access•Bonnie A B Blackwell, Bonnie Blackwell et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

U-series analyses have been made of travertine samples from the archaeological site at Ehringsdorf-Weimar. The lower Travertine, in which hominid remains were found, yields apparent ages from >350,000 to 200,000 yr. Correlation between isotope ratios yields an age of about 230,000 yr. One sample of the upper Travertine gives and age of 111,000 ± 47,000 yr. Both upper and lower travertines contain fauna and flora indicative of interglacial conditi…
