  • It Isn't Charity because We've Paid into it

    Open Access•Darren Thiel•ARTICLE•Qualitative Sociology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 48

Drawing on interviews with welfare claimants living in Essex, UK, this article examines the material and symbolic effects of the UK government's 2012 Welfare Reform Act, and it highlights the participants' interpretations of and responses to that. In reaction to their sense of material and symbolic exclusion, participants made moral claims for their inclusion through a notion of social citizenship based on collective reciprocity and care. They cl…

  • Le philanthrocapitalisme et les « crimes des dominants

Linsey Mcgoey, Darren Thiel et al.•ARTICLE•Politix•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 3

  • Charismatic violence and the sanctification of the super-rich

    Linsey Mcgoey, Darren Thiel•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•2018•Cited by: 23•References: 51

Drawing historical comparisons between the nineteenth century and the present, this paper describes and analyses how an elite section of the global rich, through mega-giving and a re-emerging notion of 'noblesse oblige' that is enshrined in the philanthrocapitalism movement, have fostered a sacred rationale for their extreme wealth. Not only do the new nobles hold the power of wealth but, through mega-giving, they generate a moral imagery akin to…

  • Ethnic Stratification within Organizations

    Open Access•Darren Thiel•CHAPTER•Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2015

Ethnic stratification within organizations implies the differential ordering of ethnic or national groups into particular segments or “strata” of a single social organization, usually signaling a form of ethnic inequality whereby some ethnic groups occupy more advantageous strata than others. Social organizations represent the overt coordination of the activity of a number of people in the interest of achieving specific objectives. Examples of or…

  • Criminal ignorance

    Darren Thiel•CHAPTER•Routledge International Handbook…•2015

The concept of denial has a distinguished pedigree in criminology. This chapter describes how it has been used to understand crimes ranging from minor youthful delinquencies to major genocides. Drawing on the work of Sykes and Matza and Matza, the chapter begins by describing how ‘techniques of neutralization’ – the accounts and stories that structure various denials – are said to operate to release people from moral binds and enable transgressio…

  • Builders, bodies and bifurcations

    Open Access•Darren Thiel•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 23

This article examines how the ideas about working-class culture presented in Paul Willis's classic monograph (1977) Learning to Labour apply or do not apply to the data generated by an ethnographic analysis of a London construction site that I conducted in 2003/4. While Learning to Labour had significant relevance to understanding the class-bound masculine cultures of the construction workers, because building work has a pre-industrial history an…

  • Contacts and contracts

    Open Access•Darren Thiel•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 33

Debates over the constitution and operation of economic markets tend to neglect their empirical variability and frequently fail to recognize the specific qualities of labour and contract markets. Based on one year's participant observation on a London construction site in 2003/4, this article demonstrates how labour and contract markets were informally regulated and reproduced, characterized by alternative exchange forms that sometimes involved i…

  • Class in construction

    Open Access•Darren Thiel•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2007•Cited by: 42•References: 39

Descriptions of manual employment tend to ignore its diversity and overstate the homogenizing effects of technology and industrialization. Based on ethnographic research on a London construction site, building work was found to be shaped by the forms of a pre-industrial work pattern characterized by task autonomy and freedom from managerial control. The builders' identities were largely free from personal identification as working class, and coll…
