  • The Oxford Handbook of English Prose, 1640-1714

John J Mctague, Nicholas Mcdowell et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of English Prose,…•2024

The Oxford Handbook of English Prose, 1640–1714 is the most wide-ranging overview available of prose writing in English during one of the most tumultuous periods in British and Irish history. Stretching from the outbreak of the English Civil War to the death of Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch, the volume is unprecedented in the breadth of its coverage of an age in which prose moved from the margins of cultural life in Britain to its centre. T…

  • Satire as Event

John J Mctague, John Mctague•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Eighteenth-Centu…•2019

This chapter focuses on three ‘practical satires’: the impersonation of the mountebank Alexander Bendo by John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1676); the prediction of the death of the astrologer John Partridge by Jonathan Swift, writing under the soubriquet Isaac Bickerstaff (1708); and Alexander Pope’s administration of an emetic draught to the bookseller Edmund Curll (1716). These satires are ‘practical’ in that they involve real or imagined ev…

  • Censorship, Reissues, and the Popularity of Political Miscellanies

    John J Mctague, John Mctague•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Life•2017

This article begins with a literary and material analysis of two instances of post- and intra-publication censorship in Poems on Affairs of State, vol. 4 (1707), and The Foundling Hospital for Wit (1743, 1744). As well as illuminating the climate in which political materials were read and circulated, these interventions both turn one bibliographical item into something that looks like two, presenting problems for the way they are represented in t…

  • Anglo-French Negotiations Over the Boundaries of Palestine, 1919-1920

    John J Mctague•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•1982•Citada por: 1

Ever since the Arab-Israeli War of June 1967, the question of Israel's borders has been a bitter source of dispute. Having captured the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights during that conflict, the Israelis have insisted upon a readjustment of their pre-1967 borders. Those boundaries in turn resulted from the first Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49 which divided up the territory of the former British Mandate of Palestin…
