Business must go on: 175 Years of an Olive Oil Business Beyond Firms and Families
As opposed to most literature on the history of family firms, this article focuses on the continuance of business –products, services, markets– which is not the same as the longevity of the firm, understood as the maintenance of ownership, control or management, or of the business family, with its kinship connections, succession of generations, etc.The article aims at demonstrating how a business can be perpetuated regardless of firms or owning f…
A Born-Again Global Firm: Inés Rosales Sociedad Anónima Unipersonal (Sau) in the Traditional Sector of Pastry Production
The literature on internationalisation processes in family businesses has boomed with the emergence of new approaches and different perspectives. One of these schemes analyses the so-called born-again global firms, mostly technology companies, which experienced an internationalisation process after one or more serious incidents affecting it. The case of Ines Rosales extends the frontier of the meaning of a global born-again firm to firms in indus…
Family Cohesion as a Longevity Factor of Business with Intergenerational Transmission
This article contributes to a line of research in Business History that aims to determine the factors of family business longevity in the long term with the study of individual cases. The literature has identified family cohesion as one of the essential factors for survival. Cohesion may be reinforced or broken at the time of the intergenerational transfer. This study finds that a critical response on the part of the business family to the diffic…
The strategies of the Spanish cotton textile companies before the Civil War: The road to longevity
This study, based on family business theories, offers an innovative vision of the Spanish cotton industry. It proves that Spanish cotton companies, just like their European counterparts, implemented a strategy that was consistent with their nature as family businesses and went beyond the economic-institutional frames within which they developed. The article identifies this strategy as `conservative, because its main objectives were longevity and …
Monks and Businessmen in Catalonia: The Benedictines of Montserrat (1900–1936)
This article studies the strategy developed by the Benedictine Community at the Monastery of Montserrat to conceal their patrimony through the constitution of a public limited company. The singularity of this case lies in the opacity that the Benedictines created regarding their properties in the eyes of the government and in the fact that the public limited company was, rather than just a simple mechanism to conceal the Community's assets, a rea…

The adaptive strategies of Spanish cotton industry companies, 1939–1970
This article explores the strategies carried out by the Spanish cotton industry, drawing the distinction between dynastic and non-dynastic companies, and the business strategies to preserve the family firm, to keep the control of management in the hands of the founder's family, and to maintain long-term living standards. To achieve this, companies showed a remarkable capacity to adapt to the changing institutional, political and economic context …
