Combating London’s Criminal Class
In November 1862, an article in The Examiner suggested, 'the grand aim of prison discipline was obesity'.If prisoners served their full sentence, the article continued, corpulence would render exconvicts incapable of re-offending.Unfortunately, the author concluded, the 'Ticket of Leave' system ensured that most convicts did not serve their full sentence, and were released on license, fit and healthy, and ready to commit more crime. The article wa…
Women, Pleas and Property Crime
From a random sample of five-hundred petitions submitted (1819-1840) by felons convicted at the Old Bailey, only thirty-nine were female petitioners. This approximates the female-male felony ratio of convictions for felonious property crimes in London during this period. 1 The thirty-nine female petitioners are the focus of this article. In particular, the article examines evidence and arguments suggesting that ideas of morality and social constr…

Protestant Military Humanism in Early Stuart Ireland
This article addresses the role of Protestant military humanism in early Stuart Ireland. The central argument is that Protestant military humanism as embodied in the works of such authors as Geoffrey Gates (fl. 1566–80) and Barnabe Rich (1541–1617) played a vital role in the Jacobean plantation of Ulster. These authors combined a strong commitment to the Protestant religion with the conviction that martial virtue was essential for the preservatio…

The ‘Global Mental Health’ (GMH) movement, an influential driver of transnational knowledge transfer in the field of mental health, advocates evidence-based strategies to ‘scale up’ services in low- and middle-income countries. As with debates on global and local frameworks for social work, there are concerns about marginalisation of knowledge that does not neatly fit the GMH discourse. This article analyses the professional and disciplinary stru…

Inventing the British Republic
Richard Beacon’s Solon His Follie (Oxford, 1594) has stood at the center of efforts to construct a significant republican past for the British Isles prior to the actual experience of republican government during the Interregnum (1649–60). In this interpretation the preeminence of monarchy in late Tudor and early Stuart England did not preclude the development of quasi-republican modes of civic consciousness emphasizing the active life of the citi…

Sovereignty, Supremacy and the Origins of the English Civil War
This article integrates the concept of sovereignty with religious perceptions of misrule in the years leading up to the English Civil War. Existing revisionist narratives have emphasized the consensual nature of early Stuart political culture, especially the central role of the ‘common law mind’ in determining the proper place of potentially rival political vocabularies of natural law, civil law and absolutism. This article argues alternatively t…

England, Ireland, Magna Carta, and the Common Law
The treason trial of Connor Lord Maguire, second baron of Enniskillen, in February 1645 brought into focus competing conceptions of the constitutional relationship of England and Ireland. Maguire had been implicated in the plot to seize Dublin Castle on 23 October 1641 during the Irish revolt of that year and was tried in early 1645 before a Middlesex jury. The key issue of the trial was whether Maguire, as a peer of Ireland, having committed tre…
