  • How Modern Are Modern Crusade Studies

    Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•Speculum•2024•References: 23

This article explores the historiography of the medieval crusades in recent decades. It begins by questioning the usefulness of the compartmentalization of the field of crusade studies into “traditionalist,” “pluralist,” “generalist,” and “popularist” approaches, which has been employed for some time to describe different strands within modern crusade scholarship. It argues that the stark contrast between “traditionalists” and “pluralists” in par…

  • Papal crusade propaganda and attacks against Jews in France in the 1230s

    Open Access•Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2023

This article presents a case study of the papal communication accompanying crusader violence against Jews in France in the mid 1230s. The pogroms perpetrated during the preparatory phase of the so-called Crusade of the Barons, during which 1000s of Jews were killed, are the best-documented anti-Jewish attacks of the thirteenth century. They coincide with a period of unprecedented crusade propaganda in Europe when crusades to the Holy Land, the La…

  • Ritual, what else? Papal letters, sermons and the making of crusaders

    Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2018•Cited by: 3

This article investigates the importance of papal letters and crusade sermons for the process of recruiting crusaders and analyses different communicative aspects which were at play during events recruiting for the crusade. It argues that both papal letters and sermons were vital elements for effective crusade propaganda but that they fulfilled distinct functions. While letters emanating from the papal curia set the strategic, organisational and …

  • Kreuzzug und regionale Herrschaft

    Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•German History•2015

German crusade studies are slowly but surely gathering pace. In this new book Alexander Berner investigates the involvement of the counts of Berg in the crusades between the middle of the twelfth and the beginning of the thirteenth centuries. The counts of Berg were one of the leading noble families of the Rhineland during the high middle ages, dominating the regional political and seigneurial scenes together with a number of other powerful famil…

  • Martin VOLKL. Muslime, Martyrer, Militia Christi

    Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2013

The history of the crusades is currently experiencing a revival in the German-speaking academic world. In particular, there are a number of younger scholars, like Martin Völkl, who have made aspects of crusading the topic of their Ph.D. theses, thus bringing a distinctly Germanic mode of historical inquiry into a field of study that, in recent decades, has been driven forward and dominated by English-speaking academics. Völkl's study is divided i…

  • The roles of women in the crusade movement

    Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2004•Cited by: 5

This article gives a survey of the roles women played within the medieval crusade movement. Apart from considering the evidence for women joining crusade expeditions as pilgrims, fighters or camp followers, attention is given to the vast area of women's contributions away from the battlefields and the impact women had on the propaganda, recruitment, financing and organising of crusades and their roles in looking after families and properties as w…

  • Crusade Propaganda and Ideology

    Open Access•Christoph T Maier•BOOK•Crusade Propaganda and Ideology•2000

This book, first published in 2000, presents an edition of seventeen ad status model sermons for the preaching of the crusades from the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. The majority of these texts had never been printed before publication of this book. They are unique sources for the content of crusade propaganda in the later Middle Ages, giving a rare insight into the way in which propaganda shaped the public's view of crusading during…

  • Crisis, Liturgy and the Crusade in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries

    Open Access•Christoph T Maier•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1997•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The First Crusade has been described as a ‘church in procession’ and a ‘military monastery on the move’. The progress of the first crusading armies to the Holy Land was indeed accompanied by regular liturgical practices, acts of devotion and intercessory rites. Before each battle and during sieges the crusaders fasted, prayed, celebrated mass and confessed their sins. They went in processions and sang psalms. This wealth of liturgical practices r…

  • Crusade and rhetoric against the Muslim colony of Lucera

In 1268/9, in the aftermath of the crusades against the Hohenstaufen in Italy, the papacy launched a crusade for the destruction of the Muslim colony of Lucera in northern Apulia. The article traces the events leading up to this crusade by looking at the Lucera Muslims' involvement in the struggle between the papacy and its political enemies in Italy. It investigates the way in which the Italian Muslims entered papal crusade rhetoric and describe…
