  • Gary Gerstle, The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order

    Open Access•Patrick Andelic•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023

In 1989, Gary Gerstle—and his co-editor Steve Fraser—published The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order, 1930-1980, a collection which remains invaluable for scholars of the New Deal and mid-twentieth century US politics (Gerstle and Fraser, 1989). With the wreckage of the New Deal order around them, Gerstle and Fraser, and their contributors, traced its rise and fall from the Roosevelt to the Reagan years. Now, standing in the ruins of yet anothe…

  • Walter Nugent. Color Coded

    Open Access•Patrick Andelic•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

Walter Nugent notes that “at first glance” his new book Color Coded: Party Politics in the American West, 1950–2016 might appear to be “a political history of the West since World War II.” However, his purpose is more specific: to study “party shifting (or its absence)—which states changed their party majority, when, why, and in which parts?” (6). The so-called color coding in the title refers to the practice, largely driven by television news co…

  • The Old Economic Rules No Longer Apply”

    Open Access•Patrick Andelic•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy History•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The fact that this bill proved political…

  • Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the 1976 New York Senate Race, and the Struggle to Define American Liberalism

    Open Access•Patrick Andelic•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 14

The 1970s was a decade of acute existential crisis for the Democratic party, as ‘New Politics’ insurgents challenged the old guard for control of both the party apparatus and the right to define who a true ‘liberal’ was. Those Democrats who opposed New Politics reformism often found themselves dubbed ‘neoconservatives’. The fact that so many ‘neoconservatives’ eventually made their home in the Grand Old Party (GOP) has led historians to view them…
