Black Church Arson in the Museum
This paper explores the material and representational politics that are catalyzed by Anti-Mass, an installation made by Cornelia Parker from the remains of a burned Black church located in the deYoung Museum in San Francisco, California. Applying an attention to religious materiality (the interpretive circuit between words, bodies, and things), semiotic ideology (an approach that explores competing and ascendant meanings), and an ethnographic sen…
Interaction and Isolation in New Georgia: Insights from the Nabo Point ceramic assemblage, Tetepare
This paper describes a ceramic assemblage from a Post‐Lapita site on Tetepare, a geologically distinct island on the periphery of the New Georgia group, Solomon Islands. Previous studies of ceramic assemblages in the region have found evidence of exotic sherds and patterns of pottery transfer indicating population mobility during a colonisation phase establishment of new communities in coastal lagoon settings. Here, a geochemical and petrographic…

Strangers, Friends, and Kin: Negotiated Recognition in Ethnographic Relationships
Anthropologists have framed ethnographers as participant-observers, strangers, and friends and have written about ethnographic research encounters in terms of the productive spaces between researchers and research collaborators. Informed by my review of research literature on ethnographic relationships, my application of de-colonial, feminist, and postmodern research methodologies, and my experience of being reconstituted as a "[church] sister" b…

Ancient Solomon Islands mtDNA: Assessing Holocene settlement and the impact of European contact
Topogenic Forms in New Georgia, Solomon Islands
James Fox coined the term ‘topogeny’ to refer to practices where the recitation of an ordered sequence of place names is employed as a means of categorizing and transmitting social knowledge. In the Solomon Islands such narratives are an important component of tribal identity, typically tracing ancestral origins to inland mountains and then descending in a sequence of migratory steps towards the coast where present-day groups reside. Previous acc…
Cult assemblages and ritual practice in Roviana Lagoon, Solomon Islands
Mortuary architecture and ritual assemblages have played a central role in archaeological inquiry since the discipline began. Most recently they have featured in the archaeology of social organization where variations in scale and value of the objects concerned are seen as reflections of religion, ideology, ethics or politics. This study looks at the shrines and cult assemblages of late prehistoric Roviana Lagoon, in the Western Solomon Islands. …
Chienne de Guerre: A Woman behind the Lines of the War in Chechnya
Landscape, Violence and Social Bodies: Ritualized Architecture in a Solomon Islands Society
This article considers the interplay between the bodily experience of landscape and the formation of sociality. We investigate the social experiences of landscape in nineteenth-century Roviana Lagoon in the Solomon Islands, dealing specifically with the ritualized architecture of a fortification on Nusa Roviana Island. Drawing on oral tradition and archaeological and historical data, we argue that the architectural remains reflect a powerful mode…
