Land of Dreams: Greek and Latin Studies in Honour of A.H.M. Kessels
This collection of essays by twenty-eight Dutch scholars is intended as a tribute to prof. dr. A.H.M. Kessels on the occasion of his retirement as professor of Greek Language and Literature at the Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands). It reflects his broad interests in the entire field of classical scholarship, ranging from early Greek poetry to later Latin literature and the reception of classics in modern literature. At the same time, the …

Apuleius: Rhetorical Works
"These rhetorical texts by Apuleius, second-century Latin writer and author of the famous novel Metamorphoses or Golden Ass, have not been translated in English since 1909. They are some of the very few Latin speeches surviving from their period, and constitute important evidence for Latin and Roman North African social and intellectual culture in the second century A.D. They are the work of a talented writer who is being increasingly viewed as t…
Apuleius, Pudentilla, and Christianity

The Enigmatic Lady Pudentilla
The Enigmatic Lady Pudentilla Vincent Hunink Roman literature, like Roman society in general, was dominated by males. From this “men’s world” only a few women seem to stand out as individuals. Hence it is not surprising that whenever a Roman text presents a marked female personality, the relevant data from the text are readily used by scholars to reconstruct her biography. This is certainly the case for Aemilia Pudentilla, the wife of the famous …

Notes on Apuleius' Apology
For the transmission of Apuleius' Apology, Florida and Metamorphoses, our main witness is a Florentine MS (F = Laur. 68,2), on which all other MSS depend1). Closely related to F is F (= Laur. 29,2), which often presents the correct reading when F is illegible. Some more recent MSS appear useful in other cases where FO agree in obviously wrong readings. On the whole, the authority of ?F has been widely accepted in modern Apuleian scholarship. In i…
"Apuleius and the "Asclepius
Rien d…
The Prologue of Apuleius' De Deo Socratis
Apuleius' philosophical discourse De Deo Socratis (hence; Soc.) is preceded in the MSS by a long prologue, which has vexed classical scholars for centuries1).The prologue is generally considered not to belong to the discourse, given its contents* In addition, most scholars assume a subdivision of the prologue into five different fragments. In this paper, I will re-examine the question, and argue for the unity of the prologue and discourse, as well…
