  • Wege zur Freiheit

    Alfons Fürst•BOOK•Wege zur Freiheit•2022

Alfons Fürst traces the paths to freedom etched out in the pagan, Jewish and Christian thinking of antiquity. The early Christians drew on ancient concepts of self-agency as developed especially by the Stoics, and propagated heavily the freedom of choice. The study demonstrates how Origen of Alexandria forged the first metaphysics of freedom in which freedom is conceived of as a fundamental principle of being.

  • Wege Zur Freiheit

    Open Access•Maximus Tyrius, Rainer Hirsch‐Luipold et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Ist Beten sinnvoll?•2019

  • Sapientia Salomonis (Weisheit Salomos)

    Open Access•Rainer Hirsch-Luipold, Walter Ameling et al.•BOOK•Sapientia Salomonis (Weisheit…•2015

Alfons Fürst, Luise Ahmed et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Monotheistische Denkfiguren in…•2013

The articles in this volume analyze monotheistic concepts, arguments and models using authors from late antiquity as examples. The authors deal with significant aspects of monotheistic thinking in which the development of complex ancient monotheism is expressed in Christian and in pagan texts as well.

  • Monotheistische Denkfiguren in der Spätantike

Alfons Fürst, Luise Ahmed et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Monotheistische Denkfiguren in…•2013

"For a long time, monotheistic concepts of God have dominated the understanding of religion in a Europe shaped by Christianity. For the early Christians, the monotheistic concept of God, which was adopted from Judaism, was an elementary part of their self-image. Not always taken into account was the fact that monotheistic trends were also noticed in ancient polytheistic culture, trends that are discussed as "pagan monotheism". The articles in thi…

  • Der apokryphe Briefwechsel zwischen Seneca und Paulus

Therese Fuhrer, Alfons Fürst et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Der apokryphe Briefwechsel…•2012

  • Monotheism between cult and politics

    Open Access•Alfons Fürst•CHAPTER•One God•2010

The debate about pagan monotheism, which was sparked by the publication of Athanassiadi and Frede's Pagan Monotheism in Late Antiquity and the critical response that it provoked, has run for several years, and has led to numerous related publications. The span of these contributions is wide and extends from the ancient Near East and Egypt to ancient Israel and Hellenistic Judaism, and as far as classical Greece, the Hellenistic world and the Roma…

  • Origenes

Origenes Origenes, Karin Metzler et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Origenes•2010

Origen’s work is mainly preserved only in fragments, as he was condemned as a heretic after his death. Thus only a fraction of his commentary on Genesis is still in existence, albeit a relatively large portion of the work and one of particular significance, as the story of the Creation is used to treat major themes in cosmology and views of destiny. Fragments of the history of the Patriarchs provide examples of Origen’s idiosyncratic hermeneutics…

  • Der apokryphe Briefwechsel zwischen Seneca und Paulus

Open Access•Folker Siegert, Alfons Fürst et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Der apokryphe Briefwechsel…•2006

  • Was Nützt Ein Feind? Eine Kynische Maxime in Der Antiken Christlichen Literatur
