The Racial Failures of Novel Form
This essay argues that the form of Ralph Ellison's never-completed novel, posthumously published as Three Days before the Shooting . . . (2010), reflects a fundamental quandary for Ellison, namely his inability to reconcile his own faith in an integrative democracy with his commitment to representing Black life, including the Black experience of political erasure. This quandary is heightened by Ellison's professed commitment to the novel form's c…
Off-the-Cuff Law-Making
This article presents a discussion concerning the role of police rationale(s) in Spain within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, where exceptionalist strategies aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus came to dramatically strengthen existing social divisions. In line with some authors who have already approached this phenomenon from different disciplines, our premise is that most serious emergencies boosted by Covid-19 were not a mere matt…
Beyond Hamsters' syndrome
On Neoliberal Exceptionalism in Spain
This article offers a critical review of the SpanishPlan Estratégico Nacional de Lucha Contra la Radicalización Violenta(National Strategic Plan to Fight Violent Radicalization or “PEN-LCRV”), focusing on its most controversial discursive elements. While it is not possible to perform a complete empirical examination of its impact after five years, we can highlight some if its achievements, effects and shortcomings. Through a review of the key con…
The Jews Are “The New Jews”
This article explores the place of Jews and Jewishness in a broader American political and cultural discourse of race and racialization. Borrowing methods and analyses from across the field of Critical Race Studies, the article argues that Jewish Studies should shift attention toward Jewishness as a discursive formation in order to understand the significance of iterations of Jewishness that are not directly or wholly about Jews. Beginning with t…
Thinking in Butler
So much has been said about the BDS movement in general, the ASA's boycott resolution in particular, and Judith Butler's advocacy of BDS at large that it seems important to begin this review of Parting Ways by saying what it is not. Parting Ways is not a polemic for boycotts, or even against Israel. It is not a rousing critique of Israeli human rights abuses or international illegality. Parting Ways is not even a sustained investigation into a co…

Affectionate, Anxious, and Perplexed
My impression of the future of Jewish American literature study is necessarily filtered through the hazy thoughts and murky plans for my own future research and writing, though as I write this I see that it correlates somewhat with other scholars' good work currently circulating or forthcoming. I begin with the urge to put all the words in this journal's title in quotation marks, to suggest that each is a starting point for research and writing a…
What We Talk about When We Talk about Beloved
A decade's worth of criticism lauds Beloved for mourning the trauma of American slavery. However, much of this criticism is limited by the boundaries of trauma-theory. Alternatively, an analysis of property-rights in Beloved, focusing on the legal problem of "claiming," demonstrates that claiming is an act of psychical self-possession as well as a formal demand for property rights. Claiming property presupposes but also produces the individual fr…
Re-placing the Border in Ethnic American Literature
In 1856, Emma Lazarus, the Jewish American poet most famous for contributing the epitaph at the base of the Statue of Lib erty, wrote a pastoral poem about Jewish refugees in America titled "In Exile." 1 "In Exile" celebrates the relative refuge found by Russian Jewish immigrants who escaped from the pogroms of Eastern Europe. "Strange faces theirs, wherthrough the Orient sun / Gleams," Lazarus writes. Stranger still, these Jews are not Talmudic …
