The article discusses three versions of the Snow White fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm (1810, 1812, and 1857), delving into the meanings of colours and colour names occurring in them as well as changes in the names and meanings. The analysis proceeds from the structural method of fairy tale study and explores the symbolic meaning oppositions of colours and their names, such as in/out, light/dark, life/death, logical/mythological. • The basic color terms of Mandarin Chinese

Jingyi Gao, Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2014

In this paper the theory of the evolution of basic color terms introduced by Berlin & Kay is applied to Mandarin Chinese. The data was collected using the fieldwork methods, color list and color-naming tasks. The rainbow order of colors does not affect the list task results. The results, i.e. basic color terms, are calculated according to the procedure in Davies & Corbett. There are nine basic color terms in Mandarin. Ranked according to the cogn…

  • A Wooden God of Estonians From Before 1800

    Open Access•Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2004

Little is known of the ancient Estonian pantheon. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia (13th century) contains references to Taarapita, the great god of Saaremaa. However, reports of the cult of Peko as the fertility god of the Seto people living in South-East of Estonia are relatively recent. Of material images only one of Peko and two of the household guardian Tnn have survived. While studying Brotze's collection in Riga, the author has discovered…

Little is known about the ancient Pantheon of the pagan Estonian gods. One can find the earliest written record about the Great Estonian God Taarapita from the Chronicle of Livonia from the beginning of the 13th century. In South-East Estonia the cult of a corn god Peko was alive till the beginning of 20th century. Even a wooden Peko figure has persisted. In this paper two pictures from another wooden god attributed to the pagan Estonians are pub…

  • Taarapita - the Great God of the Oeselians

    Open Access•Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2004

We have read about Taarapita in the Chronicles of Henry of Livonia (Henrici Chronicon Livoniae), according to which he flew from the mountain where he was born (it is speculated that it was the Ebavere Hill in Northeast Estonia or Vaivara in the Blue Mountains) over to the Island Oesel. Local islanders screamed of joy over their Taarapita. Finally, when the whole country was Christianised, the inhabitants of Riga reportedly cast him out of the co…

  • Eesti keele maailmapildist

    Open Access•Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2003

Using linguistic tools we can reconstruct the ancient meanings of modern concepts and words and thereby learn something of the ancient worldview of our ancestors. This paper focuses on the terms meel `mind', hing `breath, soul', and vaim `pulsation, ghost, spirit', and on the history of these terms in Estonian and in other languages. Some Greek, Semitic, and Germanic soul-concepts and their changes are analysed. We must expunge our terms from the…

  • Taarapita - saarlaste suur jumal

    Open Access•Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Taarapita is a god known to us already from the 13th century Estonian chronicles. In different versions of the chronicle, the name is written differently: Tharapita, Tarapitha, Tharaphitam, etc. - leading to the conclusion that the name Taarapita is the most suitable for use in Estonian. The name has been interpreted as a shout "Taara, help!", or "Taara's flash". Today, Taarapita is often either misinterpreted (e.g. `owl god') or considered a min…

    Open Access•Urmas Sutrop•ARTICLE•CAM•2001•Cited by: 48•References: 9

The list task and its two parameters (term frequency and its mean position in the lists) are discussed here. A new simple cognitive salience index, S = F /(N mP), that combines the two list task parameters is presented together with the procedure for its calculation. The cognitive salience index is normed to vary between 1 and 0. The basic terms in every domain are the most salient. The salience index of the ideal most salient term has the figure…
