  • Breaking down the musician's minds

Luiz Naveda, Luiz Alberto Bavaresco De Naveda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2021•References: 47

The relationship between musicians and their musical instruments has influenced music engagement and musical structure across societies. In this work, we study how musicians react to changes in their instrument and the associations between keys and pitches using experiments that simulate the interface of the accordion. Seventeen accordionists, pianists and guitarists took part in the study. The results show accordion players are more affected by …

  • Microtiming Patterns and Interactions with Musical Properties in Samba Music

Luiz Naveda, Luiz Alberto Bavaresco De Naveda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 32

In this study, we focus on the interaction between microtiming patterns and several musical properties: intensity, meter and spectral characteristics. The data-set of 106 musical audio excerpts is processed by means of an auditory model and then divided into several spectral regions and metric levels. The resulting segments are described in terms of their musical properties, over which patterns of peak positions and their intensities are sought. …

  • A Cross-modal Heuristic for Periodic Pattern Analysis of Samba Music and Dance

Luiz Naveda, Luiz Alberto Bavaresco De Naveda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 47

Samba delimits a privileged cultural territory, which is populated by a diverse set of dance and musical expressions. Although several authors have stressed the fact that music and dance are intrinsically coupled in samba culture, there is a lack of proper methods that allow the description of this relationship in terms of musical patterns and body movement. In this study, we develop a method to unravel this relationship, using a computational he…
