  • Cannabis and Tobacco Co-Use and Cannabis Dependence: A Survey of US Adults in Legal Recreational Cannabis Markets

Brian J Fairman, Lívia Maria Dutra et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Cannabis and tobacco are frequently used together, yet health risks may differ by mode of co-use. This study examined patterns of cannabis/tobacco co-use and their associations with problematic cannabis use in legal U.S. markets. METHODS: We surveyed 2978 adults (aged 21+) who used cannabis in the past 30-d and lived in states with legalized recreational cannabis. Participants were categorized as cannabis-only, concurrent (separate us…

  • Impact of survey item wording on reported tobacco use among youth: Effect of adding ‘even one or two puffs’ to use questions

Open Access•Benjamin W Chaffee, Lívia Maria Dutra et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2024

Having ever used tobacco is a key surveillance metric. Existing tobacco use survey items differ in their inclusion of minimal use language, such as "even one or two puffs." This study aimed to quantify how minimal use language affects tobacco ever use prevalence estimated from adolescent surveys. Participants (N=5127) in the 2022 Teens, Nicotine, and Tobacco Project online panel survey of California adolescents (ages 12-17) were randomized to one…

  • Perceived Safety, Not Perceived Legality, Mediates the Relationship Between Cannabis Legalization and Drugged Driving

Open Access•Lívia Maria Dutra, Camille Gourdet et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2023

Cannabis legalization has rapidly spread throughout the United States and is associated with multiple public health outcomes, including driving under the influence of cannabis (DUIC). To improve understanding of the relationship between legalization and DUIC, we tested two potential mediators of this relationship: perceived safety and perceived legality of driving high. We analyzed data from 1,236 current (past 30-day) cannabis users who were rec…

  • Differential Relationship between Tobacco Control Policies and U.S. Adult Current Smoking by Poverty

Open Access•Lívia Maria Dutra, Matthew C Farrelly et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

The study's purpose was to identify differences in the relationship between tobacco control policies and smoking by poverty. We matched state smoke-free air law coverage (SFALs), tobacco control funding (TCF), and cigarette taxes with individual current smoking and demographics from supplements to the Current Population Survey (1985-2015). We regressed (logistic) smoking on policy variables, poverty ( p = 0.050). Among adults, SFALs, TCF, and tax…

  • Effect of menthol cigarette and other menthol tobacco product bans on tobacco purchases in the RTI iShoppe virtual convenience store

Jamie Guillory, Annice Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

Our findings suggest that menthol bans could have great public health impact by reducing cigarette purchases. However, tobacco marketing strategies, such as creating green (or other replacement) versions of menthol cigarettes, may undermine public health benefits of a menthol ban by prompting purchases of non-menthol cigarettes. Our findings highlight the importance of taking tobacco marketing tactics into consideration in tobacco product regulat…

  • Revolution or redux? Assessing Iqos through a precursor product

Open Access•Jesse Elias, Lívia Maria Dutra et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

IQOS appears to be a variant of Accord without consistent improvements in exposure to aerosol toxic compounds. In contrast to PM's past claims for Accord, PMI now claims in its MRTP application that IQOS reduces health risk. This shift in stance is likely not the result of any toxicological difference between Accord and IQOS, but rather a change in the social and regulatory landscape permitting these claims

  • Philip Morris research on precursors to the modern e-cigarette since 1990

Lívia Maria Dutra, Lauren M Dutra et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

  • Racial and non-racial discrimination and smoking status among South African adults 10 years after apartheid

Lívia Maria Dutra, Lauren M Dutra et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2014

Racial and non-racial discrimination may be related to South African adults' smoking behaviour, but this relationship likely varies by the timing and frequency of these experiences. Future research should use longitudinal data to identify the temporal ordering of the relationships studied, include areas outside of South Africa to increase generalisability and consider the implications of these findings for smoking cessation approaches in South Af…
