  • Citizens and Producers

    Open Access•Valerio Torreggiani•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2026

At the beginning of the twentieth century, European societies experienced a profound transformation linked to the emergence and growth of powerful economic interest groups – such as trade unions, agricultural leagues, and industrial or banking federations – which increasingly challenged the traditional bourgeois liberal and individualistic order based on restricted suffrage and limited political participation. • The Other Side of Class Struggle. Business Interest Associations in Liberal Italy (1861-1914)

    Open Access•Valerio Torreggiani•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2025

This article has two primary aims: first, to provide a non-sectorial history of business interest associations in Italy from 1861 to 1914, and second, to introduce a novel interpretation of the logic behind their collective actions. The study identifies three distinct periods in the evolution of these associations in liberal Italy, each defined by a unique collective action logic: the homogeneity phase (1861-1881), the fragmentation phase (1881-1…

    Open Access•Valerio Torreggiani•ARTICLE•Laboratoire italien•2024

A contribution to recent historiographical debates concerning the transnational circulation of corporatist projects and ideas, the article aims to determine to what extent, and with what theoretical outlooks, the principles of the fascist corporatist State circulated in Great Britain during the 1930s. The reception of fascist corporatism will be analysed by examining the influences that the model of the corporatist State, developed in Italy in th…

  • Corporatism in Early Twentieth-Century Britain

    Open Access•Valerio Torreggiani•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article engages with the most recent literature on the global circulation of corporatist projects, discussing three reform schemes elaborated in Britain during the first half of the twentieth century – G.D.H. Cole's guild socialism, Dudley Docker's technocratic business parliament and Harold Macmillan's conservative industrial self-government. Overcoming the often too rigid equivalences between corporatism and fascism, this article seeks to …

  • Corporatism and the British Constitutional Heritage

    Open Access•Valerio Torreggiani•ARTICLE•Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro•2018

This article challenges a historiographical understanding of corporatism as an appendix of fascist ideology by examining the elaboration and diffusion of corporatist cultures in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. The case study seeks, on the one hand, to highlight the changing nature of corporatism by showing the different forms - fascist and non-fascist - that it took in Britain in the given time period. On the other hand, the ar…
